Default How much$ to ship a set of rims and tires?

I am looking at purchasing a set of 16" rims and tires from a guy on the East Coast. They would be shipped from CT to Wisconsin. How much do you guys think it would cost to ship these items? What would be the most cost effective way to package them yet ensure they do not arrive damaged? They seller wants to just drop them off at the shipper and have the shipper package them up for the tune of $60 a piece. That price seems very high to me. I could drive there and back for $140 in gas. <---- This is an option. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Speedy

Sounds like they are dropping them at the UPS Store to package them - that's a rip off, however, they guarantee them if they get damaged. You just need two cardboard boxes per wheel. 1 to fit the rims in with some old towels wrapped around them, and a 2nd box that fits the 1st box exactly in it. This way its double boxed. It should cost about $25 a piece to ship. You could drive there if time is not an issue.

When shipping tires (no wheels), take duct tape and tape 2 tires together. That way UPS will accept 2 tires as a single package. I had a pair sent from NJ to WI for $20 which included picking them up at the seller's house.

$60/per seems a little high, but maybe he doesn't have or want to take the time to box them. Wheels are easy to ship, but wheels with tires are more difficult due to the weight.

Depending on the weight, the best way to ship wheels and tires is two at a time in a custom box. Put the two wheels face to face with cardboard between them, then band them together so that they won't rub or bang against each other. Pack them in a double box with an extra layer of cardboard on the ends.

When you figure your gas money, don't forget tolls for most of the states you'll be driving through. If you were going to the other coast I'd offer to go with you.

I have shipped numerous sets, running into the 10s of sets recently.

FEDEX,
Wheels run about 15 bucks per no packaging, doesnt matter where they are going, I have shipped up to an 18X10 it was 18.

Wheels with tires tend to run about 25-27 dollars per.

Tires only should be in the 9 dollar range, depending on weight.

One thing is for sure, if you are shipping with UPS you can grab a container of Vaseline before you go.

Wheels w/ tires ~ $15 per - just cut out cardboard circles for the front and back of each wheel and tape them up. Bring plenty of tape, I went through a roll and a half. Had a set shipped to me that way and I shipped a set that way via Fedex no problem.

speedracing944: Hehe, you have more patience than I. Neither the seller or myself were interested enough in the sale enough to work things out. Good luck!

Jerad: I do like the idea of the circles and tape. I'll have to remember that.

You might check with Amtrack. When I moved my daughter's stuff from Minasota to Seattle last spring, the rate per pound was quite a bit less than UPS. Of course you have to send and pickup at a train station, but that worked for me. --Roy--

I just shipped a set of Fuchs with tires they weighed 41lbs each. Dimensions were 28x10x28. Plug the info in the carrier of choice. I'd start with fedex ground, next dhl, last time I checked you couldn't insure dhl ground. Btw, I bought the set of Dials from Jerrad, when he sent them fedex showed 26 lbs per wheel and tire combo. But when I sent my fuchs with tires they weighed 41lbs per wheel and tire combo? Jerrad did you slip someone at fedex a few bucks?

Ha, I had weighed them at home using the trusty scale method and they came out to ~42-43 lbs per. Then I put the cardboard and wrapped what seemed like 5 lbs of tape around each wheel. When I weighed them at Fedex they came out to something like 18 lbs apeice. If I could find a wheel and tire combo that weighed 18 lbs I'd be in business.

edit: just looked at the receipt shows 26 lbs per, still very light

That's funny, cause I argued with the people when I shipped mine because I thought their scales were "weighted" in their favor.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I am going to call him to see what he can do for shipment. Hopfully he is willing to work with me on this issue. If not, I am prepared to take a drive out there. I have vacation days to use and my wife and i have some friends in New York we can visit. As far as tolls, I know about Illinois toll ways and Indianas toll way. What other tolls will I hit?

Unsigned,
Did you ever get your shirt in the mail? You should have recieved it by now. It was shipped on Tuesday morning.

That's the way my Kahn wheels with tires were shipped to me. They came through without a scratch. FedEx from Washington (state) to Ohio was about $180 for them though

Whatever you do, don't ship them via fedex or UPS at a mailbox etc. At least around here. I went to one in East Providence a couple times when sendiing range rover parts that were too big for USPS, and I had checked calculators online, for shipping this upper tailgate that weighed 60 pounds, and was something like 60 inches by 35 by 7. At UPS website it said 78, at fedex they said 94. I went to mailbox etc. (there isn't many shipping outlets around here) and they said 140 for ups, and 128 for fedex!!!!!!!

I did it because i drove 35 minutes to get there, but i went there antoher time with like a power steering box that the website said 19 dollars, and they wanted 65, so i said nevermind, and drove to staples and shipped it also through ups, for 19 dollars!
