Default New calipers for my 944S2

Hi Guys;

I'm looking for calipers for my 89 944S2. (Fronts.) Does anyone have a cross reference for what model calipers will fit? I think these are the same as 944 Turbo calipers, RS America, and stock 993 calipers.

Thanks in advance.

Don:
Why do you need new calipers? Are yours shot?

If you have extreme corrosion build up where the brake pads sit, they can be machined out. That's what I had done with mine, and they are fine.

IMHO, our brakes (same as the 951 units, BTW) are more than sufficient for our cars.

Z-man.

I drive the car year round here in Rochester and the calipers are a mess. Lots of crud
build-up, especially around the metal tabs that help align the pads. I guess I can
try to remove them, and hit the areas with a grinder or a bead blaster.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks...

There is a good article in a past 911&Porsche World magazine about how to refurbish 951/S2 brake calipers that are in the same condition as yours. It's from a year or two ago I think. I have the magazine at home. However, I won't have access to a scanner until 11/29 as I will be out of the office until then. I could scan then and then upload it for you, if you still need it then.

Don - that is exactly what I'm talking about! For some reason, the calipers (and the identical 964 Calipers) from our vintage have this problem. As best as I understand it - the road crud has some type of reaction with the metal used in our calipers and the crud buildup infuses with it.

Before I had my calipers machined, I would grind down the backing plates of my brake pads in order to get them to fit! That was a pain since I track my car, and would go through two sets of pads per year!

My shop did the work - Powertech in Rockaway, NJ. They have the equipment and did a great job at a reasonable price. They can be reached at 973-586-3210. (Website: www.pwr-tech.com). I am sure they can provide greater details as to what needs to be done. Also: you may want to purchase a caliber rebuilt kit while you're at it. Tell them Zoltan sent ya!

One option would be to send them out for rebuilding. So far I've found one place (no affiliation, etc.) that has some experience with the Porsche Brembos:

www.goldlinebrakes.com/TechReport101.htm

Corrosion builds up behind the spring plates, making fitting/removal of pads to be nearly impossible without removing the calipers (BTDT). You will likely find that the cheesehead bolts that attach the spring plates to the caliper will be corroded. Very difficult to work around this situation. The place mentioned above quotes roughly $200/caliper for a full strip down, rebuild, paint, and benchtest.

Another alternative would be to find a set of used calipers from a dismantler in the south/southwest where corrosion is less likely to be an issue.

Can anyone confirm that the stock calipers from a 96-98 993 are the same
as my 944S2 calipers?

Thanks...
