Streamed the first 5 seconds.... Saving to disk!

I imagine they must be nitro cars right? They must have decent power.

Nope, electric cars. Nitro R/C cars aren't ideal for drifting because of the massive weight shift that occurs after some of the gas has burned off. The electrics make very decent power.

Also, no stream of blue smoke out the side - definately not nitro.

Cool video - I remember when the HPI Micro came out - everyone was drifting those.

Damn.. are these the same size as nitro cars? I don't know what kind of batteries you would use that weren't too heavy/last long enough to do this type of thing.

What's an hpi micro? any links?

not yet, but I'll get some...all it needs is a radio as the one I'm using is dead... I did LOTS of searching to find the issue...

I put nearly a grand into this thing, and it's faster than **** through a brass horn, I'd say a cool 50 MPH with electric. Frankly, it's worse than my Porsche, I can't afford to do it anymore, so that's why I want it gone. $200.00, pics coming eventually...

Makes my new hobby that much cheaper....

I don't quite know if you can that....

When I got out of R/C stuff a few years ago, I was into the 1/10th scale carpet stuff, I was spending wayy too much money. For an electric car, I had as many as 4-8 different battery packs, then who knows how many motors. On top of all that you need a special charger to charge the batteries...since they aren't just ni-cad...then there's the power supply, tires, gears, and on and on...

Fun stuff, but I was spending a bit too much on the hobby.

Gas and electric r/c's run the same money about. Nitro are not good for drifiting partially due to the weight shift from fuel, but because they do not have enough torque at mid throttle to break the tires loose. Though there are a few different ways of drifting now, the most popular being either wrapping the tires with electrical tape or using PVC based tires.

If any of you are serious about R/C cars and buying one. Let me know, i was very into this stuff, and still sorta am...but im done spending money on it as i have basically everything i need. If your interested in buying one, dont go with the HPI Micro. Id go with a 1/10 scale car. A company called Yokomo actually makes a set of cars specfically made for drifting. But basically all it includes is a special type of tire. And yes, both nitro and electric cars come in the same scales. Run times with electric cars usually last from 5-10-15 minutes depending on the type of cells (NiCD or NiMH) your using and the mAH capacity rating.

And if you do decide to enter the hobby, be prepared to spend lots of money. Initial start up costs are very expensive for both nitro and electric.

Charger - $50-75 for a decent one. $100+ for a good one
Battery Packs - Ideally you want 3-4 packs so you can have a pack on recharge, cooldown and running. They cost anywhere from $30-50 depending on if you get quality cells or not.

Car cost - Depends greatley on which kit you get, but figure anywhere from $175 - 300.

Radio and reciever- The transmitter will usually run close to $75-100 depending on what you get first.

Onboard electronics - Motor, speed controller. These range form very cheap to very expensive. The cheap stuff means you wont be going very fast, the expensive stuff means...the skies the limit. You need to take into consideration the motors need to have the brushes serviced after a while. Motors cost from $25-50 and speedcontrollers form $40-100. Id personally go with a brushless motor as they are much more efficient (much faster) than regular brushed motors and require very little service at all. The only problem is they run for about $200 for the motor and controller

Basically with the bare minimum of stuff you will need, your looking at $450-500 in startup cost for a decent car. You can alternativley buy a RTR setup and end up in the $250 - 300 range to be up and running. But keep in mind, RTR kits will never satisfy your need to go faster. The best place to get a good deal is look around for 2nd hand stuff on eBay. Keep in mind though, this hobby can easily turn into a money pit. The amount of aftermarket parts is astounding. And you may think "Oh this upgrade only cost $25..maybe $50". You will start saying this too yourself about every single thing you upgraded. Sooner or later you will end up with a car built entirley of aftermarket parts, and $1000 out of your pocket. And when you turn around and try to sell it...you would be hardpressed to get 1/4 of the money you spent on it. You can get some killer deals on eBay, as there is little resell value even with tons of upgrades. Though the problem is you dont know the abuse the car or equipment your buying has gone through.

Hpi Pro3's own. I have one. I might just bust it out soon. I think taking off the frint belt would be pretty cool for drifitng. It doesnt really matter, but I have the 996 GT3 MK1 body for it. It's pretty slick.
