Default 924S cranks but no start

Friend and I are putting a '87 924S back together. Car had a bad lower end due to a broken timing belt. Sound famaliar?

We installed a good motor and put everything back together, but now the car won't start. It'll crank fine, but doesn't catch. Spark is confirmed, but it doesn't seem to be getting gas. Replaced the fuel pump and we have jumped the dme relay. It'll run if we spray ether down the t-body, but it then sends enormous clouds of white smoke out the exhaust.

Car sat with the bad motor for a number of years. The motor we put in is a known motor, it ran fine in the 944 that it was pulled from.

Any ideas?

Do you have fuel pressure at the rail? Maybe old gas? Check to see if the plugs are wet after cranking, if they are wet and you have spark- check the coil, you may not have enough spark. have you done a compression test?

Welcome to Rennlist.

Try to post the list of what you have done so far.

Did you also replace the fuel filter? Also, did you clean out the fuel lines? Also, while cranking, you should hear the injectors clicking. If you don't hear the injectors clicking, they are gummed up and not letting gas into the cylinders. You can still have good fuel pressure, but the injectors are not opening up enough to get a good spray. The top ends of the injetors have a small screen in them. The mesh is so fine, that if you have old fuel, it will gum the screen up. Take the injectors out and spray them inside real good with carb cleaner. Then take each one and try to find some way to stand them up, spray some carb cleaner back into them, and let it sit for a couple of hrs.

Gas that is old will clog the injectors everytime. You can drain the tank, but you still have the old gas in the lines and in the fuel rail. I always blow the fuel lines and the rails out on any car that has sat for more that 6 months.
