How hard do you drive your 944?
Just curious..
I baby mine, never more than 3000 RPM until the car has reached operating temperature AND the oil has warmed up. Even after that, I rarely exceed 4000 rpm. Just wondering what other peoples driving habits are, and if most 944s are pampered like mine or run pretty hard?

Mine get's driven fairly hard at autocross events, routinely hitting 6500 rpms.
On the street, it's rare that it sees over 5000 rpms. There is really no need unless I care to become a bright red ticket magnet.
I always follow the proper warm up procedures, and make it a point to never drive it for less than 20minutes at a shot to allow for proper moisture burn off in the exhause.

I've only been driving it for this year since march, but, I generally drove it pretty hard. I do always let it warm up before going over 3k.. But after that, I usually hit 5300 or so in first or second at least once per ride. (i live in the middle of nowhere, nothing but trees around, and I don't speed really, just get to the limit quick). I also hit twisties pretty aggressively on the way home from work generally. I have the belief system that says if I was goign to baby it, I wouldn't have bought it. I didn't buy it to be seen as an enthusiast, or to be seen as someone driving a nice car.... I bought it for what it's performance capabilities are.
But, now that my engine is on the verge of kicking the can.... I tend to keep it under 4k at all times.
(the engine isn't going because of the way I drive it, but because of the PO's neglegance..... )

I keep it under 3k until it has been at operating temp for a bit and the oil pressure goes down a little at idle. Annoying getting passed by everyone at stoplights, but worth it.
I occasionally run it up to the rev limiter getting on the freeway just to check up on it that all is good . . . and of course for the enjoyment factor.. ...but I stay civilized most of the time. On my old 83, I used to redline it daily... I was trying to break the car so I had an excuse to get another one, but the damn thing seemed to like it!

From: Central Illinois. Cornfields a plenty.
Completley babied.. not over 2800 Rpm til out of the bottom 3rd of the temp guage.
I dont think my car has ever seen 6K except for a throttle blip once or twice. 95% operated under 4100 rpm in the time of my ownership.

Proper warmup procedures here as well, however there is no doubt that my car hits close to redline on most of my drives, at least once or twice. It is too fast to drive fast everywhere, but if I need to make a pass on the highway or accelerate on an entrance ramp, it surely sees full throttle. I basically sold my red car because it had overheated 3 times in it's 48,000 mile existence. I preferred to start all over, that is why I am going through a complete build with Promotion Racing, including what should be a great engine rebuild to provide me with confidence.

I baby it when not fully warmed up. Then, it's really fun to get to 4,000 in 3rd...and NAIL it on the highway! I am always shocked at how quickly the car gets to 80mph that way! And at how stable the car feels at 80--before I slow back down to 70 to avoid a ticket!

I warm mine properly, but hardly ever use 5th gear around town. I keep 1/4 tank of fuel at all times because, even at 47, I like to race people. When racing I regularly hit the rev limiter in 1st gear at 7,000 rpm. A 951 is at its best when running hard.

The rev-limiter is there for a reason - to tell you when to shift. Bounce the needle off it 2-3 times on every shift, sounds awesome to anyone ouside the car - like an F1 car.
-ok, any newbies need to realize this post is a joke.

When i do get time to drive i start it up in the garage and let it run for about 5 min. Then i baby it and shift around 2800 rpm until engine temp is normal and oil the same. After that i shift at 3000 rpm and if i havent driven it for a while i take it to 4500 just to (in my mind) get everything going.
Eitherway i baby the car.
