Default Thinking out loud...your thoughts? (wheels/tires)

I have 16" boxster wheels on my 924S...16x6 ft. and 16x7 rr...the tires are pretty much brand new...yok avs's 225/50-16 and 205/55-16. The offset of the rear wheels is 40mm, which makes the tire/wheel fill out the well very nicely. The problem is that if I drive very aggressively the rear tires rub slightly on the fender. My thought on how to fix this is to put 205/55-16's on the front and rear. What do you think?

Now...the second delema. I have an 85.5 na with 15" fuchs 15x7 ft. and 15x8 rr...in pretty good shape (no curb rash...black centers could stand a repaint) with very good rubber on them. I really want 16" wheels on this car as my plans for it involve DE's and auto-crossing. I plan to take the Yok's off of the 924s and install them onto either 16" fuchs or phonies. I want 16x7 ft. and 16x8 rr.

Does anyone have either 16x7 and 8 fuchs or 16x7 and 8 dials early offset w/o tires and that aren't all chewed up? Would you be interested in trading for a set of 15x7 and 8 fuchs that have good Kelly Charger tires ...the sizes have slipped my mind, but when I get home I'll check them and edit the post.

Am I crazy?

I love those boxster wheels, but I'd want 16x7's all around, which is why I haven't bought them yet.

The 924 should have a spacer on the fornt/rear .On the back, you can grind the flange sticking inward, or you can make that spacer thinner. Grinding the flange is easier with just an angle grinder and about 10 minutes. You just have to repaint a little edge, but it's inside the fender, so it won't look ugly if you just do a black or something.

Jason, you are crazy, but thats beside the point.
The 16's will actually slow you down in an autocross. There was a thread on this a while back, but I can't remember if it was on this board... I'll try to find it

Alriight Ryan...you have me considering some other possibilities now!!! Didn't realize that the 15's were better for autocross. The people who are making the claim in the thread are the folks I will be competing against next year...LOL.

Just to clarify...you said that on the 924s there is a spacer there that could be machined down? I'm confused!!

Jason:
For wheel advice for your 944 (for track use), I'd go to www.44cup.com and ask those guys on their message board. (No affiliation) Alot of them are running 15s for track use.

To fit a late offset wheel (boxster wheels) you need a spacer on the early (pre 85.1) cars. You can probably measuer that spacer and either have another one made a bit thinner or have your machined down a little (that may be possible, I'm not sure). easiest thing is to just grind the flange on the inside of the rear fender or run and early offset wheel (23mm, not 52/53mm).

Jason, for the 85.5 go with a 225/50/15 all around. I had the same size Fuch's on my white 944 and that's the tire size I ran.

How close are the rears on the 924? You may be able to have a little negative camber dialed in to the rear to stop the rubbing.

Ryan...just as an FYI...I've already been running the wheels on the car for 2+ years. The 23.3 would stick out past the fender on the car and look ghetto. Remember 924S's are all late offset cars!

Pete...I'll prolly go the 225 route as well on the 85.5. I'm just looking to be able to lower the rear eccentrics on the 24S and not rub even more. I have to push the car pretty hard to get the rub, but it still bothers me that it happens.

When you lower the rear with the eccentrics the negative camber will increase. That should solve your rubbing issue.

I run 7/8 in 16" and no rub. 205/225

No spacers are on a 924S

40mm is not enough space need at least 49mm. O/S is 53mm so you are 13mm off.

15 or 16 is going to have the same overall diameter because the 16" tire is lower on profile so I do not see where 15 is better for AX. The 16" wheel is heavier and that is an issue. So if you find 16" same or less weight than the 15"'s should yield same performance.
