Default 944/951 With Primer Look?

Long story short, on a pipe dream. I'm thinking about adding a 951 to my one car autocrossing stable (now enjoying an 85.5 NA). Evil car, if acquired, is an '89 Turbo S.

Mechanicals are first class, interior perfect and less than 70K on the clock. I don't care for the color and the body is not perfect, having spent some early days as a track car, complete with Matter roll bar, etc. Car is metallic gold with some shakey repaint areas on the nose and some bondo in one front fender.

What do you guys think about painting the whole car flat black and then doing the Club Sports in a darkish gun metal gray paint? Utlimately, I think I would like to get it pearl white, but until then, would flat black be bad, or just bad????

Anybody have pics of similar treatments on 944/951 cars.

I think you have been looking at too many pictures in japanese-sport-import-compact-car tuner magazines.

You mean like this?

That's Bob Stretch of Speed Touring Car fame and also a multiple SCCA ITA champion. He paints all of his race cars flat black.

Go for it. Don't make it a rattle can primer job. Real professional primer. But just so you know, primer is porous. (I think your saying you wanna prime it, cause why paint it flat black now if you are just gonna paint it pearl white later? BTW: Pearl white is my FAVORITE color on 951s...drool)

hmmm... flat black. . . . let's see. .. flat black will absorb more light than any other color and sheen you could possibly paint your car . . .. which translates to more heat than any other color/sheen you could possibly paint your car . . . . . .your track/autox car that you are going to sit in under the blazing summer sun with the air conditioning off or removed and wearing a helmet . . . . and stress mechanically far beyond what you would an everyday street car . . . . with that nice flat black expanse of hood to soak up heat over your engine compartment. . . .

...add to that the stigma of police grouping you with the "ricer" crowd based on how your car looks (painting your car flat black is a great way to scream "I'm an irresponsible teenager/early 20s street racer" to the police, whether you are or not)...

....oh yes, and it is porous, too! .... so it will trap moisture, be difficult to clean . . .. sounds great!!!! I'm heading to Autozone!!!!!

All good. All true. Yes, it is a dumb idea And yes, it would be "real" primer, but probably just over top the roughed up gold until I got the bux together to do a first class repaint, replacing the fender, etc. And yes, I have seen too many ricers, but we have a kinda unique autocrossing community that includes this nasty Corvette and I kinda want to put a fire breathing 951 on the same plane for a season, just for fun...

I'm within two seconds of this guy's ZR1-based creation now with my NA. On Cumberland's wide open airport autocross courses, I think a 951S would be right up his tail pipe The Vette is known affectionately as "Farm Use"....my idea is to chase him down with a "Farmenuzen" Turbo S.

Actually, I think the flat black would be rather stealthy. The cops are going to be looking for "bling."

As for the porocity, I'd give it a light coat of flat clear to seal it.

just remember that primer absorbs water. Flat black paint with a flat clear coat on it is the way to go if you go that route. The truck in my sig was sprayed (by me) with just paint (easier to fix trail damage), and the paint soaks up dirt because there is no clearcoat on it. Make sure to use a sealer coat of some sort.
