Default N/A Chin Spoiler Write UP PArt 1....!

Ok guys basically all I have done so far is.....I went to home depot and purchased some pink insulation board that comes in 4x8 sheets for about 10 dollars...We then took the foam and held it under the car and traced the footprint of the lower valance...After that we began to cut the foam to that desired footprint, but still leaving about an inch of pretrusion to play with...

After some trial and error the spoiler began to take shape...We used a regular steak knife and some 180, 240, grit sandpaper for sanding the foam.....Some now after we had the shape we wanted..We covered the surface or area where the glass will be layed over with a solvent free Resin..As anything with solvent in it like the fiberglass resin will eat away at the foam..So now the solvent free resin will provide a smoother harder surface to apply the fiberglass cloth and Resin to, without the worry of the resin eating the foam...And plus we are trying to get the surface as smooth as possible before we start laying the glass....SO as of today this has cost me about $30 and 8 hours of my time.....Not bad.....

Below you will find some additional pics of the chin spoiler with my most recent progress...Along with a few pics of the spoiler that my buddy who is helping me with this made from scratch for his ride to give you an idea of the quality....He made both the carbon fiber piece or spoiler base and the actual spoiler as shown below...Oh and we just repainted his entire car too....We hope to lay the first 4 layers tomorrow night...! We are planning on about 8 to 10 layers total....

There will be more pics and info to come as It comes along.....

MOre to come...

GREAT Thread and more information needed! Does the resin coated foam serve as a female mold or is part of the finished product?

I wonder if there is enough room to do an early 928 style spoiler with ducts for brake cooling?

Hey thank's guys.....The spoiler I am making above is sort of our test subject, to see how all this works out and such.....So yes the foam is being used as the mold/plug.....The fiberglass will be layed right over the foam..Thats why we had to use the black stuff on there...( solvent free resin ). And then once the fiberglass is sealed and dry, the foam will be pulled....THis way does work, but its not the best way as it should be done for production purposes. because your mold gets destroyed.....Basically we are going to make this one.. and if all goes well we will then make a formal mold for making some parts...We are making plenty of templates....But I cant decide if we should lay down some carbon fiber cloth or, fiberglass cloth and just paint it....But I cant decide...What do you guys think....Color match the chin spoiler, or leave it in the carbon fiber....? THe carbon fiber you can see on Caigs car above......

ANd once a the spoiler is complete there will be a formal step-by-step write up on this matter on how I did it, and how much it cost to do, and what materials are needed.....

Those front splitters take an awful lot of abuse. Mine was only on for the summer and it has about a billion or so rock chips and scrapes and I'm very careful with it on. You may not want to use expensive carbon fiber on a part that will get beat up very quickly.
