Default Parking in/around NYC

Well, it is finally happening. I'm moving to NYC.

I'm not going to part with the 993, but I also don't want the parking monkeys to adopt an attitude of "it is just a little scratch" sort of approach. So I'm looking for other options. I don't plan on driving it often...not at all in the winter, and weekends during the summer, as I don't need a daily driver in Manhattan obviously.

So, anyone nearby have a garage space they want to lease out, or know of options in/around Manhattan?

I will keep my ears open. I am a 45 minute train ride from Penn. Welcome to NY.

I am tempted to evict my wrench's hot rod pickup from my garage as long as I have a set of keys to your 993. If I drove it twice as often as my S2 and Firebird combined that would be 500 miles a year.

Also, go to www.metronypca.org there may be an ad for a garage. I will check the Post and if there is an ad I will post it here for you.

Try a search on Craigslist.org...sometimes people rent out spots in Queens and Brooklyn, which is only a subway ride away from Manhattan. Enjoy my hometown

I went through this last spring when I brought my boy to the city. If you look carefully, you can find a good garage in the right neighborhood. I keep mine in DUMBO, which is a ten minute walk from my apartment and right at the entrance and exit to the BQE north and southbound. The key is to spot a place that has collector cars in it. Such garages have figured out that these are the best customers to cater to, as they hardly ever take the cars out and only do so during the off hours. They also tend to be located near an exit point (there are several good garages near the lincoln tunnel).

My garage is basically a warehouse in an area that gets little transient traffic. They let me keep the p-car in the back, park it myself, and keep it covered. Because I only drive it on the weekend when most regulars are away at their vacation homes and such, they only have to move one or two cars to get mine out. Mine sits near a 1986 930, a 1960 Bentley, an E-type roadster, a 1959 caddy convertible, and a pagoda top SL. Dings are not a problem.

Most people are turned off by the garage because it's small, inconveniently located, and only has one attendant on duty. In other words, it's perfect.

Look and ye shall find.

You can also try right across the river in Hoboken, NJ where you can get a secure spot for about $180 a month. Sure it's only a space but it's enclosed and entry is only granted via keycard. To top it off there are a number of Ferraris and other high price exotics stored in there and the attendants are well aware that these vehicles require close watch. The name of the garage is "Park at Park" and it's only a bus or ferry ride from Manhattan. (PATH train is an option too but you'll have to walk 14 blocks to your car at that point)

Thanks so much for all your help. For the winter anyway, I found a private garage (well, 1/2 of one) in Forest Hills (very nice neighborhood), a few minutes walk from the express E train from Manhattan. We'll have to reassess during the summer, but for winter storage, this should be great.

Thanks again.
