Default Cheap Power Steering Rack?

Well I need to replace my power steering rack, and I remember that meridian was a recommended place to get one, and that there was a group buy a long while back. So I emailed them and they wanted $325 and a $200 core deposit. Does anyone know of another reliable place to get one (asap) that might run me a little cheaper? I am a college student so the budget is pretty tight.

You should try Zim's Autotechnik. I think I paid $275 for a reman'd unit that has worked well.

Don't forget, whichever vendor you chose to purchase the steering rack from, you MUST replace the p/s fluid reservior and flush the system in order to ensure the warrenty to be valid (i was told that by several vendors).

If you want to save money rebuild it yourself. I think Rennbay has a kit.

It's not the kind of thing I'd bother installing a used one.

I'd second the Rennbay kit. I helped with the rebuild of another 'lister's rack, and the instructions were very straight forward and accurate. I'd recomend also flushing and replacing the resivour, as it has a filter in it.

I bought the 944online kit, A.K.A the rennbay kit without the little plastic ring that I broke. Very straight-forward, and easy to do. Far cheaper than a rebuilt/new rack. Been over a year now, and doesn't leak a drop.

Bought the rennbay kit, and other than putting a seal in backwards the first time, it was the way to go. Once you have your rack off, doing the seals is pretty easy, and you have to take the rack off anyway....Over a year, not leaked a bit. Took me two days to do, but the seal part woulda only taken me an hour or two, had I installed one right the first time, so add an hour or two to your R&R time, and save $200....

Ah well, rebuilding it won't really work because it's not only leaking, one of the driver side tie rods is tweaked from hitting a curb. Was one of my first times driving a rwd in the rain

Tie rod has nothing to do with the rack rebuild or with a new rack. Replace the tie rod itself, it's a separate part and part number.

The tie rods unscrew off the rack ends. If you pull back the boots you will see where the rods attach. On the ball joints where the rods attach, there is two flats. Use a LARGE wrench over the flat parts (I use a big adjustable wrench... shhh.. dont tell anyone) and unscrew them from the rack.

I believe Paragon or 944online both have relatively inexpensive tie rods.

Thanks for the help guys, I wasn't aware of what was involved. I will probably end up replacing the tie rod, and perhaps just rebuilding the rack with your kit. I need to order a replacement odometer gear anyways!
