Default Swapping LSD in 944 Tranny

Question: How hard is it to remove a Limited SLip Differential from a 1986 944 tranny and install it in a 1988 non LSD tranny?

Any ideas where I might be able to find instructions?? or is this strictly a Tranny shop procedure....

Thanks for any and all advice.....

If you swap the whole tranny, it's pretty easy -- any reason why you're not doing that?

I made dummy bearings 10 thou smaller than the new ones to help set the preload, made setting the DP angles much easier, on the whole the job is about a 6/10. I found it hard to get the rear plug for the box so I spun an alloy one up to take it's place but I guess you could find a core plug to do the same. The bearings I got from Porsche and on the way back from picking them up I stopped in a bearing traders and they had the exact same bearings on the shelf as it's a fairly common size, for less than a quarter of the price (you should change the bearings if your changing the diff), however that said its a walk in the park to change the whole transaxle in comparison, I'm guessing it's a turbo box going in an NA so you want to keep the original gearing.

FYI, there is a seller on ebay that seems to have an endless supply of those plugs (that you have to poke a hole thru to remove, thus necessitating a new one when you put it all back together). I think she has two or three on there right now for a price less than what they cost from PCNA. I bought a few for my future endeavours.

Don't you just hate that, now I find out, never mind, at the time (3 am) teh easiest solution was to make one, but I'm off to ebay to get a few more, I'm hoping not to use them.

Hey Adie,

Speaking of transmissions, I see that there are a few trans experts over there on the 560sec board. Any chance that I am able to register and post there? I'd like to be able to ask some questions and also maybe share a little info that I have in that department. If not, that's OK too.

You can post there as long as you follow the Rules Of The Board.
I said so.

Tifo, why dont you just drill a blind hold in the plug and tap some threads into it?

Thanks Doug!

Patrat, it's the big black end plug on the back of the trans housing. The only way to get it out is to put a hole into it and pry it out. Once there is a hole, the integrity is compromised. I imagine one could find a way to seal up the hole and re-use it, but I would prefer to just install a new one. Especially on something as expensive as a trans rebuild.

Much easier to swap 5th gear than to swap the R&P & diff.
