Default Sound Upgrade Ideas

The deck in the car's decent, not sure what year it is but its a Blaupunkt nevada (i think, the orange display one). I was thinking of putting in 4 new speakers, and possibly a small sub, 8" most likely. Can anyone recommend some good replacement speakers? I have an 84 944. I assume id do 4x6 in the front.. and then ive heard you can do 4x6.5 in the back? Do the 6.5s fit in fine, or will i have to cut to fit em in? Also, ive heard lots of people recommend the KLA box .. i was thinking of getting the one that fits in one of the 2 side wells but had 2 questions.

1) Whats the difference between the one with or without the RF Drivers? What do the drivers do for $50?
2) Is the box really worth it for $130? It seems like a couple pieces of plywood nailed together .. and seems like it could be built for just a fraction of the price.

So plz recommend some good speakers and good sizes for the early 944's. I want good sound, but I want it affordable. I dont want to blow a ton of money on it either. Also, any good amps (recommended wattage and brands) you can recommend would be great too. Thx

the box is worth the money, if you want to put a subwoofer in that location. The angles are complex as hell, I wasted ~50 hours trying to imitate it (did in the end, but it was hard). If you ever decided to get rid of it, the KLA box would probably hold value fairly well.

For an amp myself and a few friends have been VERY pleased with the line put out by US Acoustics. Very clean and affordable power, with conservative power ratings. I run a USX2100 amp into my 8" woofer, its nice because it fits perfectly inside the spare wheel.

The RF driver is the subwoofer itself. The Rockford Fosgate is pretty good, just make sure you get a good amp to power it.

Buy the KLA box, it is worth it and is very nicely made. 1 is all you need. Buy the one that goes in the passenger side cubby as that install is supposedly easier if you have the sunroof. You can buy their standard woofer (driver) or you can buy one from www.partsexpress.com. Get the 8", 4 OHM Quatro woofer. Then get an amp that has a built in crossover and can sum the left and right channels to drive to the sub.

There are MANY posts on various speaker options, but don't forget to search on topics like "sound deadening" and Dynamat as getting your car 3 db's quiter is the same as doubling your amplifier power. Also you should put some filters/crossovers in front of your 4x6's to keep the bass out of them. Anyway, there has been much written on this topic of spekars as well as the topic of speaker installation in the last couple of months so do a good search of the archives.

I'm using the KLA box, the quatro woofer and a Blaupunkt amp along with a Becker receiver on my 968 with great results.

Happy Listening.

Zapco makes EXCELLENT amplifiers. Probably the best for the money. Ebay has deals occasionally on used ones (think $200+).

I'm an alpine man, usually make my own boxes. Subs I run now are PPI.
Duel 12" PPI comp subs in a 944 will get your attention real quick.

Anybody have a link to that KLA box? I'm curious as to where it goes and what it looks like.

I was planning on doing a decent upgrade sound system a few weeks ago, but ive since decided to spend the money on suspension mods for this summer . I figure the stereo works and sounds decent atleast, why fix whats not broke?

A great set up for not to much $$ Front plate speakers( I custom made backing plates out of heavy gage sheet metal(instead of the 1/4 inch platic ones, that way they sit flush with stock grills.)Clarion or infinity 2 way with a 4 inch woofer will work great.I also have the kla sub box with a pioneer 8 inch sub.( i tried to make one fit and everyone advice is right.Too many complex angles.i gave up and asked santa to bring one!)I power it with a 3 ch alpine amp with built in cross over.So 40 watts to each front side and 150 watts to the sub.It sounds great plenty of power and volume even with windows down.I spent a little over $400.not including the hea unit.Im very pleased with the sound and i really like the soundstage/imaging from fronts only. And only 1 amp to install !!
