I went on a backpacking trip a couple weekends ago. I actually slept in the hatch area (hatch closed) with a backpack the night before at the trailhead. Then on the way out we had to shuttle to the cars and I got 3 people and their backpacks in the 944 again hatch closed. Who needs a cayenne.

I have a Saris roof rack system for my car, also clips to the raingutters. I experienced no rack related problems while carrying a 16 foot kayak on the roof and travelling 90mph. The only difficulty I had was crosswind stability, even a little bit of wind would twist the boat in the "yaw" axis; loosening it up and pushing the car a bit too. Slept in the hatch that night too, with full kayaking gear in the car.

My 944 does well for me as is. The hatch back is great. I've done many many trips in my 944 and it is fun everytime. I'm surprised that I can fit a jack, 4 race tires, a smaller tool box and my bags in the hatchback. Good for DE's if you don't have a trailer.
Have fun with the roof racks. Go Skiing? Maybe surfing?

Yeah, before I got my roof rack, I managed to fit a guy who is close to 7 feet tall, another guy who is closer to 6 feet tall, myself, 2 snowboards a pair of skis, and all of our gear in the car, relatively comfortably. I just had to watch my head getting out of the car because the ski tips were right by my left ear....
As for the ski rack itself, I had a Nissan Maxima before the 924. parents got the ski rack for it, and I sold the car later that year and kept the rack...as I was investigating the ski rack prices for the 924, there is 1 component (the "fit kit" as Thule calls it) that is different from the 924S and the Maxima. so to convert the rack to Porsche specs cost me $40.00.

Oh yeah, and you should see the looks on all the faces of the soccer moms at the ski resorts when you pass them goin up the hill in a Porsche with a ski rack on top and snow tires mounted, then they arrive and you're sittin there doing donuts in the parking lot. the looks on their faces are priceless!
Usually I'll bring my food up in a cooler and go back to the car to eat (cuz $6.00 for a hamburger is ridiculous...$3.00 for a soft drink and $4.00 for an order of fries is worse) and as I'm sitting there in the lot eating lunch in the hatch of the Porsche, I get a LOT of people coming up and asking me about it. "what year is it? how does it handle in the snow? where didja get that ski rack?" etc....etc..
it's great!
