the 0-60 in one whole second faster and the 800 higher rpm is worth a lot :P

0-60 in a second faster by adding a whopping 1.4HP and 3 ft/lbs of torque? I have my doubts that is going to make a 1 second difference. As both M758 and I have posted on a race car where 1/10th means a lot it very well may, on a street car, doubtful.

As to the 800 RPMs, how often are you up there? If it is often you must spend a good amount of time on track.

I think chips are not even worth it for 944N/A's. When I bought my car it had one of those aftermarket chips installed. I can't remember what it was but I know it was one of the top ones out there. The stock chip was so much better. My question is, who would know how to better run an engine than BOSCH? How can a chip add horses at all. All of that is in the engine itself. A chip cannot add horse power that is not already there. As far as power you want in a 944 N/A, give your engine a very detailed rebuild.

No offence, just my opinion.

Now if you had a turbo, that is a different story.

Chips can add HP by optimising fuel and spark curves and values. A manufacturer is not interested in peak performance from every car, they are interested in a power that is easily managed. However, for the 944 the only chips I have ever seen do anything are those from FR Wilk and the gains are posted in another thread. It is possible that on early cars the stumbling will go away but I have a feeling that is from having a completely resoldered ECM rather than the chips themselves.

I have an autothority chip.

While I haven't dyno'd it, I have switched it back and forth a few times from the stock chip to the aftermarket one. There is a definite performance increase with the autothority product from seat of pants feel. It's not great, but it is there. There is also a little more "smoothness" in the way that the car builds revs, and there is a different exhaust note.

I think the 1 second gain people speak about in the 0-60 time is due to the fact that the rev limiter is raised, thus allowing the car to hit 60mph in second gear.

That is BY FAR the most logical explanation of the 1 sec drop I have ever seen. I still dont think they are worth the dough for a stock car. Wanna be faster, save the money and buy some Koni yellows or 968 sways or some new tires.

I think Paul has some dyno-charts from Technodyne comparing various aftermarket chips.

I'll post the site of a fellow rennlister who makes these chips. very helpful with any questions you have, on top of the 7000 rpm redline, the second faster in 0-60, it gets rid of that awful cold shudder

Question, I read this forum and I see no mention of custom tunes to optimize the your car depending on exactly what you have done to it.

I read the LS1 forum and a custom tune is good for 5% ON A stock engine and much more depending on hw much it is modified.

Why is there only talk of chips for a 944?

Its sad people dont know this. Ive got to say something

The FRwilk Chip (made by a guy who KNOWS 944's) has been tested by many people. Let me quote him here...

"Acceleration is what it is all about. If you do not get at least 1/2 second faster from 0 mph to 60 mph, you did not get your moneys worth. So far, the slowest reported was .6 to .7 seconds faster. Typical numbers are 0.8 to 1 seconds faster. Unfortunately, not too many buyers have taken the time."

TYPICAL numbers are .8 to 1 whole second.

Combine that with some weight reduction (like Tifo, I love his car so much), maybe an MSD ignition with some beru silverstones, and youve got a car that can do a 7 flat 0-60.

There are people on this list who INSIST that these cars wont do faster than 8.3 seconds 0-60 (which its around 7.5 to begin with since the 8.3 is taken with 2 people in the car and is still conservative). These cars arent slow. It seems only the people who drive them are slow.

With attitudes like "Oh the N/a is crap get a turbo blah blah blah", your car is never going to get anywhere. Im just tired of people insisting that these cars are slow when they have the capability of being something decent. Sorry im just on the Sorry if this doesnt make any sense.

Heres a little food for thought though. I beat a 1998 Nissan Maxima in the yellow 1984. The car had everything in it except the spare, rear carpet and jack. The wires are old, the cap and rotor are horribly old, and it needs a tune up badly. It still beat the 0-60 in 7.4 second 5 spd maxima.
