yes the valves get adjusted every 3000 miles in the 912. thats the standard maintenence. the fuel filter is one that costs 2 bucks at auto zone (same kind that goes in a vw), and just connects to the fuel line. only takes 3 mins (literaly) to change fuel filter. i honestly dont always check the plugs every 3k.. just sometimes. its honestly more like every 6 k with checking the plugs.
but the fuel filter, oil, oil filter, and valves get changed or adjusted every 3k. and at the same time i look at the cap and rotor. cap and rotor usually go a long way, but i always check to be safe.
the valves and oil more than anything need to be changed/adjusted every 3k... thats just the way these old motors are.

ps.. the reason why i change my fuiel filter at 3k is cause its cheep, quick, easy, and prevents gunk from the fuel tank from clogging up the idle jets in the carbs. (its about 40 years old.. theres rust and crud in the bottom of the tank.. its a fact of life.. and im too cheep to get ot properly cleaned out right now).

Well, if you guys really get into the physics of it, we could talk about this for weeks...but what I've heard is that the general concensus among lube afficionados is dino oil could use a change every 3 or 4k miles, but with the advancements in synthetic lube tech, oil really only needs to be changed at the very earliest 5k mi, and even as late as 10-15k miles. Even new dino oils are waaay better than those of just 10 to 15 years ago, and the whole "change your oil every 3000 miles or else" is a bit of a mantra started and *maintained* by the oil companies, despite the advancements in technology. If you're REALLY interested in how oils and other lubes hold up, spend the entire weekend or so going through the forums at http://bobistheoilguy.com . Some of those people are hard core oil enthusiasts. who knew there ever was such a thing Also, if you run synthetic, which I think fits most people's applications, switch to something like redline or AMSoil, and run AutoRx for 1500 miles or so. Supposedly its God's gift to cars and makes engines look practically new. I have yet to try it because I have no patience for that sort of thing, but I am running almost full AMSoil in my 944 (trans/pwr steer/engine). Wear tests are a fascinating subject, no?

mine's a daily commuter, lots of starting and stopping, shutting off and turning on so I do it every 5000 k.m (3125 miles) and I use non-synthetic grade oil in mine, don't need leaks to appear!
