I go for 4-5000 with mobil 1.
I know I've told this one before, but we had a sales rep that used to visit a store I managed. He drove this VW Jetta from new and he NEVER changed the oil. He would only top it off as needed. He was a field rep, so he had probably over 100K miles on it before he sold it. I ran fine, didn't smoke or make noise or anything.

Every 3-4k miles (winter) and every 3-5 track days (summer). I can often be seen shlepping 5-quart jugs of Mobil 1 through the local Walmart.

ALWAYS change filter and crush ring on drain plug (don't get cheap here folks). Also, examine magnet on drain plug closely. It will tell some interesting stories (can you say "rod bearings"?).
