Yesterday temp was about 50F outside. Heater fan was off and temp set to lowest position. On cold startups twice, I heard a series of ticks or clicks from the dash around the cigarette light/ glovebox area. I wondered if it might have to do with that temperature sensor in the dash?

I have seen the casing for the int. temp. sensor distort in the past. There is a small fan in there to draw air over the sensor and the housing can get distorted to the point where the fan blades rub and make noise. If you take the sensor out of the dash, you can soften the plastic with a heat gun and re-shape it.

Mine clicks from that area too (not just when it's cold), but I don't know what's causing it. I was thinking it sounded like a solanoid or something in the HVAC turning on and off. Where was the relay that went bad, HY M8NC, in the fuse box or behind the dash? Thanks,

Flip your interior lights switch to permanently off and it should clear up. I have seen this come from a relay that activates the interior lights when the door opens.
May not be your problem but it is an easy thing to check.

Elf, the relay is behind the glove box-I've never heard of the light thing, but Travis knows a LOT about these cars-and you should buy everything Rennbay sells (can you tell I owe Travis a big favor?).
By the way, I'll get that ball joint out this week Travis. How is the stock on the seat kits?

I had some screeching/ticking noise coming from my glovebox as well.
Turns out the nut that secures the glovebox in the back came loose, and the washer was vibrating like crazy.

It did vibrate/screech to the point of it coming to my attention, but the noise REALLY was evident during acceleration/coasting.
There's a clamp like fastener at the back of the glovebox.
Slide the passenger seat back, stick your back on the floor and look up, you should see the metal clamp.
Behind that clamp there is a 13mm nut (IIRC) and a washer, that was my problem.

This has happened on my car on two seperate occasions. The result was the heater control valve in the engine compartment would remain open and I would get hot air in the cabin regardless of the settings. I found two vacuum switches located behing the gleove box. I figured out how they worked, I think and replaced them from a car in the junk yard. It solved the problem for a year.
The problem has come back and I tried to replace the swithes again but no luch this time. I have not had emoung time to work on it so I just rigged it so it is closed all the time. I hooked up another vacuum hose and put a screw on the end. When it is cold I just pull it out.
Not the best fix but I hate these kind of problems since they can suck up a whole weekend with no results.
Any other ideas are welcome, it is really hard to see everything that is connected to this system.

I have a clicking, turns out to be the trim around the steering column vibrating or rubbing against the dash! I heard there was a service bullitin about this problem way back when.
