broken shifter.
sorry if this question is old but obviously i love my first car did enjoyed working on it for the first day, today. anyways obviously my brother the "veteran" driver felt like feeling the shifting when it was just parked. he was looking to put it into reverse just to feel it and then BAM! the shifter broke off from the little link that goes to the tranny. he was like the shifter is moving freely! i sat down and realized it was broken. my father and I inspected it and came to the conclusion that i would need a completely new one. anyone have any experience with this? i did not even get to drive it... oh yeah its a 4 speed 77 924.

so which part broke??? was it
a- the clip that holds the shift arm in- or the pin welded to the arm...
b- the shifter itself...
c- something in the rear of the car..
if its a or b youll need a shifter unless its just the clip fell off.

Easy fix, 2 13 mm bolts and a circlip. Replace the plastic cup/bushing on the bottom as well, total should run about 50 bucks. If it broke that easy, it was time to replace it...your shifter will probably have much less play in it side to side after the replacement.

28-30 dollars for the shifter at the dealer, takes about 2 mins to replace.

I've done 2 cars this way:

I like the fact that there is no metal-to-metal contact and the plastic bushings are cheap and replaceable. I bought 10 years worth of replacement parts for less than $10. That's hard to beat. This method does require a new shift lever and is only a viable option if the shift tube bore is all boogered out. If the shift tube is bad you have to drill it out anyway or the pin will start wearing again much faster. I like the fact that it is tight and results in very positive shifting.

Paragon carries a new part, like Matt said, they are cheap. I bought a new one, with all of the new bushings, washers, and clip for around $50-$60 including shipping.

well i found one on ebay after having someone weld the old one. the old one snapped in a few seconds. thanks for that whole sheet with the modification with that bushing. it should be getting in soon and i think i will put on those plastic bushings.
