Can someone post the hours for the following work.
What's an average Mech. rate of pay on a Porsche?
Give me your opinions if you think I'm paying to much?
Car is an 86 944 N/A with 100,000 miles.
NOTE: I bought all new parts and took them into this German Mech. shop here in the area. He does Porsche 944 work all the time.
Parts are paid for, these rates are for labor only:
1) New Lindsey Racing : Spec Stage II lightened Clutch
2) New Aluminum / Lightened Flywheel
3) Speed 6 Racing : "Ultimate" short shift kit. Not the cheap version, but the $250 version that includes the replacement linkage.
4) Two Genuine Porsche Motor Mounts
He is charging me $1,475 plus tax for the above.
Then I called him back and want him to do a new Timing belt and Water pump.
Quoted:
1) $640 for timing belt and labor.
OR
2) $940 for timing belt, water pump and labor.
I took the car in last week and it will be done tomorrow. Just want to have an idea on the price and hours.

That is dangerously cheap, man. Are you sure he knows ehat the hell he is doing?? If he doesn't he might try something sneaky. Ask him to his face if he has ever done a 944 clutch and motor mounts before.

The only thing I can think of is that I am getting it done in MS. Rates per state seem to vary. He's not a "Bubba" Mech. but a German father and son team with a vast amount of knowledge and experience. Many 944's...Put in a clutch just last week. Plus a friend of theirs spoke to them about my car, so that may have gotten me a better rate.......Picking up today after them having it for 4 days. Will let you know the craftsmanship!
I thought the prices were high...so this is good to hear!

Hey Ken,
In central Ohio, a clutch job at a Porsche specialist with parts is now over $2000 - maybe $2100-2300. I just did my clutch last weekend, and my total cost for parts minus flywheel was $550 plus shipping. So figure those same parts would be $750-800 with shop markup, that would leave the labor rate for a clutch job in the $1400 give or take a hundred bucks.
The short shifter installation won't take long, as the transaxle will already be out of the car, and the motor mounts are not really that big of a deal, so I'd say that's a fair to good price that the mechanic is charging you.
Things are a bit more expensive in Connecticut and New England.
BTW, Ken - love the Phone Dials!
Two are slightly bent on the back side (looks like a tire machine did it), but it doesn't look like enough to offset the line of the bead, so they should be fine for snow tires.

944online.com has a full front engine reseal, belt, and water pump package for $495 here . Dunno if you need the reseal, but the rubber goes by age, not miles. In either case, it will save some more $$$, except for the extra labor, but then you wouldn't have to worry about the front of the engine for a long time.
I thought a belt replacement was like $400??? With parts and labor.

What's the labor rate? An NA clutch job is 8-10 hours. Motor mounts on an NA are around 4-5 hours. Import mechanic labor rates in the U.S. are in the $80/hour range these days. These are old bills, but on labor alone back in 1996 I paid $176 to have the mounts done to my 83, and in 1997 I paid $616 to have the clutch done. This was at a shop in Kentucky charging around $37/hour.
In Europe they do it differently: lower labor rates, but they ream you on the parts and many don't let you provide your own. Good thing I'm learning to do more and more things myself.
Good luck with it.
