Default 924 carrera How to get there from here...

Ok What I want is a 924 Carrera replica. What I have now is my third 944 an 86 951 which I just scored as a project car for $2500.00. It has fuchs a LSD tranny out of an 89 an Autothority mass airflow set up and it boost like hell. Now I am going to rebuild the engine, as it needs it. The tranny seems ok and the car will get some form of suspension up grades down the road.
The body however is a mess as is the interior, but the fellow I bought it from is a body man and was well into fixing most of the body problems. My question is to get an accurate 924 Carrera GT body on this beast how should I do it? My main concern are the rear flares by the way,

A. Cut the rear quarters off and find some 924 quarters to graft on then add the flares or

B. Find a nice cheap 924 gut it and simply strip the 86 turbo for it’s entire drive train and suspension?

What would all ya’all do?

I want the body accurate but am not worried about a concorse (sp?) replica. Keep in mind the goal is a 924 Carrera GT body with 951 power and brakes under it.

I'd think that getting a 924S shell and swapping the drivetrain would be easier than grafting on the rear quarters, I also wouldn't bother using the 951 suspension. The 951 spring rates and sways are a slight improvement over the stock 924S parts but for the amount of work involved I'd put in some aftermarket parts that are a few steps better. To put it another way, why take out 145lb springs and install 170lb ones when for a couple hundred bucks you can get much better parts (I've been planning the same project in my head for years now and I'm leaning toward 350 lb springs if I ever actually do it).

Oh... all the springs and sways will get redone. It will eventually wear MO30 30 mm up front and a 19 mm adjustable in the rear with some form of coil overs and stiffer springs of course.

One advantage to the 924 otion is when one goes to insure it it will not have the TURBO attached to the vin... Hummm the things that make ya go hummmmmm

Springs and sways are cheap compared to the rest of the project, why do the work twice?
One disadvantage of the 924 option is that if anything hapens to it, you'll get squat from the insurance company, you'll need a stated value policy no matter which shell you start with and the cost will be based on the value, not the VIN.

Ahh too true.

As for the real 924 on ebay... I ain't a collector for starters (at least not yet, but my co workers would disagree as 944s are starting to populate my drive way). I would like to believe that 15K will be what I have in this when done (I like to dream) plus a 951 power plant will be much faster once done. I would love to own a real one but alas till that winning lottery ticket falls across my path...

i'd just do the front end and hood scoop, probably also do a fixed headlight conversion on the 951 and call it good. the rear fenders wouldn't be noticed except by people in the know.

I thought about that but alas I REALLY like the rear flares on the 924 so I will (to a great deal of trouble) persue that end.

If you already have the 951, good at body work, and don't are about authenticity, I say stick with the 951 as the donor car. Cut the rear quarters off and graft on some 924 rears. Then add the CGT flares. You probably won't be able to re-use the 951 front fenders due to the missing material at the front corners, so you would need to source the fiberglass ones from GT racing or get a set of regular 944 fenders (cheaper and easier IMHO).

I think it would be cool to have the modern 951 interior and power/suspension, mated to a 924CGT look-a-like body. Purists be damned, it would be the perfect combination as far as I am concerned.

Get to it!

MY thoughts exactly. I really dislike the older 944 / 924S dash so I will go with the newer dash. As far as being good at body work. Well I am not but I will scrounge the money to get it done if I stay with the 951 tub. I may very well go fiberglass all around for the front quarters as well. See if I can drop some weight. I will have a 951 nose and front quarters to sell to help off set some of the cost. Still on the fence. I hope to have this rolling soon.
