Oops. "Press" didn't bring up what I needed on their site, but "12 ton" got me what I was looking for.

Here is the link to the press that I have. As previously mentioned, I got it for the sale price of the 12 ton press (also listed at the bottom of the same link).

As for making sure the parts are up to temp - just keep them in the oven for 30-40 minutes. I don't have any clever or scientific methods for verifying temperature - just time to allow for heat soak.

The damage incurred in my trans was limited to 6 teeth stripped from the pinion, the resulting chowing of several teeth on the ring gear and a wear ring where the loose teeth ground into the case. I was very concerned about needing to replace the case - this would have been a rediculously expensive proposition. I ended up sanding this area as smooth as I could with various levels of grit. The wear didn't seem to cause any structural concerns so I concentrated on the R & P replacement. I did (clean and) inspect everything else as I disassembled the box. Everything else survived in tact. Even the bearings were acceptable for reuse.

I'll try to dig up the photos I took when I first opened the trans. It was a couple of years before I went digital - so it could be a much bigger task than finding the Loctite that was used.

The first trans that i went into was a 87 951 trans. My boss bought it as a track car.The trans had been rebuilt 25 months before and now had a broken 1st gear synchro ring.Upon disassembly i found chipped teeth on 1st and 4th gear.I replaced 1st,4th,and all synchro rings. It's been about 7 months and approx. 7 track days(?)and no recurring problems.
If i buy the 86 n/a that i'm going to look at on thursday i would like to tackle a r&p swap to a deeper gear ratio.(the deepest that i can find,4.11,4.30,or higher.any suggestions,or help finding?)

I would give Powerhaus II a call or email them. They are very helpful, and know their crap when it comes to porsche transmissions and gears. I don't have their website handy at the moment, do a google search and you'll find it..........

So, did you remove/press the gears on the shaft yourself, or did you take that part to a local machine shop?

Well................................that's not really proper, now is it?

Anyway, not certain of your area, but we have a lot of fast autocross events around here. If a 944 is geared too low, that could be a problem (continually modulating between 2nd and 3rd instead of being mid to high 2nd gear runs).

well, I have only been to 2 autocrosses here, but it seems that they are a combination of a series of tight, slow corners, and then a set on long, highspeed slaloms and sweeping corners. The problem I ran into in the tight corners is that in 2nd the rpms are too low, and in 1st I am hitting the revlimiter upon curve exit. Shifting gears within the corner is more than I can really handle right now.

OK. Ours are generally fast. We *maybe* have 2 slow ones per year here. To put things in perspective, the last autocross I was at 62mph before the 5th corner (that's the top of my rev limiter in 2nd gear on my chipped car).

Intersting thread, I also would like to do this in the future. I do everything now, (paint , body , engine...) but I've never attempted the trans. It's always puzzled me, now you are making me try it.

OBTW Do you have a 944 front valance available? Condition does not need to be perfect.

It's in pretty good shape, just could use a little prepwork/TLC and a respray to be perfect. How about $100?

It's on the car still in this pic from last year:
