Default Rear speaker install

How hard is it? I know its a bit of a project, and have read the procedure on how to do it, but I wanted to know from some other people's first hand experiences. What about the whole 16-year old vinyl issue? Am I likely to rip it up trying to get it out of the way?

My 944 still has the stock speakers with cracked/disentigrated foam surround and all, so they have to be replaced, but I'm not convinced that tearing my interior up is worth it.

I didnt' pull the rear windows. I used a very short screwdriver and a thin-shaft one that would fit through the speaker holes in the vinyl piece and pulled the screws out, then pryed back on teh side, giving me enough space to get the speaker out and put in the new one. I then replaced the screws, and was done.

When you pull the old speaker out, the wires are plugged onto it, there's enough extra to pull out.

Alright, so how long do you think this procedure would take for both speakers?

I took both windows out, replaced the speakers, then re-installed the windows in less than an hour and a half. Once you know how the windows come out, it's easy. Putting them back is also easy, with that rope trick, and a little manipulation of the seal once the window is seated.

the material is old, the interior panel is made of dried out cardboard. If you pull it and bend it you will always have a crease in it. I watched the pro do it in my car, then did it with my brother in freezing weather in about an hour on his car.

What Tom said.

Not pulling the windows is a great way to make a good interior panel look crappy. For the extra 10 minutes it takes to pull and replace the window, it's worth the time for easy access to the speaker, and an unblemished rear panel.

go ahead and pull the windows if it's that easy - I have no creases, and I'm happy with it!

on my 84 I cut out the perforated area of the panel and just installed the 4"x6" speaker over it. It ended up coming out to be real clean with no mistakes shown. Of course I had to make numerous drawings with a pencil before I went about taking a knife to my precious interior. I'm going to do the same thing to this car and will do a writeup for my speaker install when the time comes.

Good luck on yours.

Since some of you sound like you know whats back there, has anyone ever tried putting a 5 1/2" to 6 1/2" speaker in there?? Its just there is hardly any bass produced by two pair of 4x6's.
