Default Help, timming belt rubs on cover..

nothing came up on a search, so I'm posting the topic.

I just pulled the belt cover for the 1000mi inspection after a full rebuild. The belt has ridden all the way back against the rear cover and now rubs . Anyone have any idea why it would do this? I replaced all the parts with new and updated the tensioner to the new style. I had the machine shop drill and tap the bosses for the tensioner and everything looked lined up. I had my mechanic check the belt install and all was as it should be. I know Perry had a similar problem with the belt going the other way..... thanks in advance.

I believe that Perry's problem was that one of his roller's was set up backwards (from the manufacturer, none the less). Are all of your rollers facing the correct way? My only other suggestion would be to remove the front cover and try to see what is pushing the belt back.

Kind of off topic, but is your "E" an FHC or OTS? My mom has a 1968 2+2.

thanks guys, i am leaving the upper cover off for now to watch the situation. i took the tension off the belt, pulled it out away from the back cover and retensioned it. i then started the car and before i could walk to the front of the car it worked its way back to the wrong position rubbing the rear cover. ill triple check the roller on the auto tensioner as it did come preassembled. anyone have Perry's web site link, i cant find it at home and the search for his screen name turned up zilch......

oh, hey ahofam. I have a roadster, but dont let the sig fool you. what i have is a complete car that is mostly in boxes. its a total basket case, it looks like a PO had rolled the car at some point and it was rebuilt. I plan on doing all the mecanicals and interior with my girls when they get old enough. but the body will be done by a shop, ive painted cars and it was never much fun......

There is a 2-3mm (not sure what size) spacer at the back of the tensioning roller that may be missing. It should keep the belt off the back timing belt cover. Also, make sure the screws of the cover to the engine are there and tight. This should solve your problem.

If you spelled it "timming" you might not get any results. It's spelled "timing". That's the issue I have with the search feature, the exact info you might be looking for maybe misspelled.

Just sincew it wasn't explained in depth, the rollers canb e backwards because one is supposed to have a lip on the engine side, and the other on the COVER side.. this keeps it from sliding off. Check tghat.

Had that same problem on my car, left off the 3mm washer/spacer from behind the timing-belt tension-pulley.

Im a bit confused on the spacers. Are there three and they go between the block and the auto tensioner body? Or, is there one and I accicently put it on the wrong side, swing arm side, of the tensioner pully? Ill post a pic at lunch of how I assembled it.

there are no spacers between the block and the tensioner. Is the roller on the tensioner installed with the lip towards the engine or towards the front of the car? The lip should be behind the belt. Do you have a new style rear cover to go with the new style tensioner? I have seen belts rub on the rear cover when the cover was not modified correctly for an updated waterpump and guard set up.

This is during the test fit before the rear cover was installed.

Does the crank gear have the washer behind it? The water pump and crank pulleys are the ones to look at for the belt going towards the block. The tensioner pulley is the one to suspect for creeping towards the front. Any wear pattern on the edges of the belt?

which post is correct, the first or the last? At first you say it is rubbing on the rear cover and then you say it's during a test fit before the rear cover was installed. I'm confused, how can it be rubbing on the rear cover if you have not installed it yet?
