The photo is taken during the test fit before the rear cover was installed and the motor was installed. Now, the rebuilt motor has 1000 miles and the belt rubbing problem. I pulled the lower cover off last night and will pull the balance shaft belt tonight to get a better look at what is going on. I'll update the post with my findings. At first glance, I think MHT is correct, I dont think I took enough material off the back cover. But I'll have to get the BS belt out of the way to get a definitive answer. Thanks guys.

I'd leave it off full time but the car is my daily driver. With the amount of snow we get here and everything associated with that, Ill just leave them on. But one day I may have to burn them in a ritual to the timing belt god........

I found the problem, my vendor sent me the tensioner roller for the 16v head which is 5.5mm deeper than the one for the 8v head.
Cruise98, I don’t think my trust washer protrudes from behind the gear. I can remember placing it over the o-ring and oil pump drive gear before i placed the belt drive gear on. And from your description the lip on the water pump is on the wrong side, see the photo.

Alengyel:
The lip on the water pump pulley is correct. Maybe my description was incorrect or not clear. I asked about the thrust washer behind the crank gear, because if it is missing, that would force the belt towards the rear a slight amount. But, you found the problem. Good job.

Thanks Keith, and thanks to everyone. So many little things changed thru the years on these cars its hard to keep things strait. And to add to that, updating things to newer designs makes it even more difficult. You all are a indescribable help!!!
