I recently did a long distance trip in my car. I've just replaced the fuel dampener and regulator, and had the injectors cleaned and serviced by a Bosch agent. I drove approx 360ish km's (222ish miles) and used about 58 liters (14 gallons) of petrol. It was, however quite a fast trip, the old girl didn't see the bottom side of 4 grand much, and the drive was through some hilly roads.

I was wondering if this kind of usage was normal with that kind of driving, or if I should be looking at my driving style a little as a culprit, because when I first got the car I was getting about 24 mpg around town, but was driving like an old lady till I got more comfortable with the car, I was getting below 16 mpg last week with some broken stuff.

What kind of milage should I see if everything is working and I'm doing mostly mixed driving, not grannying the car about, but not redlining every gear either.

For brisk city driving, mileage in the high 10's wouldn't have surprised me, but in the open road, the you should be getting mid-20's, even if you're averaging 90mph. I would begin by inspecting/replacing your O2 sensor.

IF I keep the foot out of it, the 951 gets about 28mpg. With the foot firmly on the loud pedal, that drops alarmingly fast into the low teens.

I get used to get 400 miles on a full tank, now I get more like 300 which I found out is a lot less than many of the other people that use this forum in this thread I started last week:

Forgot to mention. No O2 sensor or cat. The car is a 1982 euro spec model. I did get about 22 mpg on the way to where i was going, that was leaving it in 5th and using a far amount of right fott to go over hills and overtake slower cars. So maybe what I got is about what it should be...

I get 27 mpg doing mostly highway driving. I am usually doing 80-90mph. I was very surprised when I started to keep track of it. By the way, my car is an automatic with no overdrive and the tack is reading over 4k at those speeds.

My 944 is a euro model too. Did your 944 not come with a cat? or was it removed?

I always thought the Euro models before 1985.5 didn't come with a cat. There is a a long, cylinder shaped object under the car that's part of the exhaust, I'd always thought it was just a resonator or something, the car doesn't smell like it runs a cat. But I could be very wrong.

But definately no O2 sensor.

I average 25mpg on the 84' US model with 190,000 miles with the O2 sensor disconnected currently. I do drive mainly on the highway though with some in-town driving. Average shift point is 3200-4200 rpm depending. Higher if I want a larger smile!

I've just got 305km off 45 litres filling up today. And that was very much babying the car nearly all of the time. So I think something is still not quite right, recently replaced the FPR and Dampener, improved the problem a huge amount, but I think something is still a little amiss.

Hehehe, My record is 1080km's on 60 litres. That was an exception though. Drove exactly the speed limit the entire way (night driving, so I didn't have to worry about traffic).
For anybody local, that was Moosomin, SK to Calgary, AB, with a trip through Regina on the way.

Usually I get 600km's before the light comes on, and it takes 60-65 litres to fill. (My light comes on really early for some reason).
If I'm on the highway, I usually expect 800-850km's before the light, and again, 60-65 litres.
I've just done the O2 sensor, and rebuilt everything outside of the motor, fixed many many many vacuum leaks. FPR and fuel pressure damper are both working properly, and injectors were just cleaned.

I just finished a roundtrip run from NYC to Pittsburgh in my 951 with Guru chips, 3.0bar FPR, and stock injectors. I covered 388 miles on 14.2 gallons of gas on the way out, driving at 80-90 for much of the trip through western PA. I haven't refilled the car since I came back today, but I had about 1/8+ tank after driving over 400 miles while there and on the way back.

BTY -- Wow, gas is CHEAP in Pittsburgh! I paid $2.02/gallon for Sunoco 94 octane while I was there! That's about $0.20/gallon less than it is in NJ at the mouth of the Holland tunnel (a fairly inexpensive place to buy gas in NJ).

So pretty much what everyone is saying is something is still wrong.

I've got the car booked in at a Porsche mechanic in two days time. So hopefully it should all be sorted by that. I'll post with the results and what was wrong.

I got it fixed. Took it to a porsche guy about an hour from my place. Stuck an A/F meter on it. Started it. The gauge went to the rich end stayed there more or less. Looked at the AFM, said that someone had "adjusted" it.

He fiddled with it a few times until the A/F meter was doing what it should, and now it's pretty fine.
