Someone has a pic of my setup from 944 Fest '03. The cubbies are the way to go, with woofer they are about 13lbs. The little Kicker 8"s I have make use of the large hatch, in effect, making 1 large box. It dosn't thump, but you can hear and feel most of the desired low end tones.
FTY... why would you want a system in a track car anyway?

Well I could put in a loudspeaker and play a bowl shaking note(unno the secret note that the military uses to cuase stomach discomfort) and send everyone to the pits...

Subwoofers!
From my other Porsche. Gonna do a similar thing for the '44. Custom box in 3/4" plywood with 10" speakers driven by a 400 watt amp.

honestly, a porsche is a manifestation of your desire for enjoyment. whatever makes you happy is what should go in the car. this isn't a 73 carrera rs - there's no historical value or necessity to maintain any sort of "spirit of the car" (imo) so you should do whatever makes you happy.

When you guys keep mentioning the KLA box.. are u talking about the spare tire well one, or the one that fits into the two hidden compartments? Also, if u do the compartment one, will you get even sound since the woofer would be only on one side of the car?

I bolted an 8" powered Bazooka into the back, augments the 10-speaker stereo well enough for me to leave it all alone.
I had replaced the head unit with a Blau Toronto CD-player. Even matches the dash orange lighting...

Infinity Basslink is a nice sounding small self powered sub that looks great and can be removed when you need the extra room. I don't think that a big custom sub enclosure is what a 944 calls for.

Hi,
The deal with subwoofers is that they are intended to produce only the lowest part of the audio spectrum - typically about 100 Hz and lower. They have done numerous studies and the bottom line is that ear has a very hard time locating those lower frequencies in space. Hence they do appear 'omnidirectional'. I believe it has something to do with the longer wavelength. The opposite is true for mid and higher frequencies which the ear can generally locate quite well.
So, as the people above have said one subwoofer mounted 'wherever' - front passenger footwell, trunk, cubby, spare tire area, etc will work just fine. I have one KLA unit mounted in the passenger cubby of my 968. It works fine and gives me everything I need in the way of bass. If you do some other searches here on the forum and can find a lot more references to the KLA units and also pictures of my installation and others.
Many modern car amps also have crossovers and summing circuitry built into them so that they can handle the summing of the left and right channels into a mono signal and also directing only the low frequencies to the subwoofer itself. That is a 'low pass' crossover as it lets low frequencies pass through it. A high pass crossover is just the opposite. It blocks low frequencies and lets the ones above its crossover point go through.
Happy listening,
Phil

You miss the point peckster. You can listen to music loud with no subwoofer. You can also listen to music at low sound volume with a flat frequency response curve when you have a subwoofer. The very high end systems use subs (properly), not just the idiotic ghetto blasting bling mobiles.

Lego has it right...
I totally agree with Lego. Subs aren't strictly about LOUD - although I think that there are plenty of people out there who use them for that purpose.
Subs are there to add the low notes to the music, pure and simple. LOUDness can be a safety issue, but having a sub does not by definition make you a threat. One could argue that having a car that is loud - regardless of how it gets loud - (no muffler, after market muffler, etc) is just as big a distraction to the driver and to those around him and hence just as big an issue.
