I have a homebuilt box similiar to the KLA, and can attest that a 8" in that location does wonders. Sounds better than the 12" in my old car, and is almost as loud.

My advice if you want a box in the cubby, just buy the KLA unit. They get good reviews and the labor I put into figuring out something that would work and then building it was on the order of 40 hours. If I could go back, I would mow the neighbor's field and get the KLA, woulda saved time.

As long as you don't have the entire trunk filled with audio equipment I think subs are okay. My sound system sounds like crap and I know the subwoofer is the missing piece.

Unless you have a car that frequently participates in racing events (weight savings) then subs are okay. And even at that if you want good sounding music and need to reduce the weight you can easily remove it.

I know I was having a problem that there was no bass whatsoever to be heard when going down the highway with the windows and sunroof open. Thats the reason for my 10" in the back, but I'm only running 300Watts behind it too. Loud rattling bass is not cool though. Subs can help the sound a ton if you use them right.

I've seen sub boxes built into to spare wheel well which are hidden and very effective.

I'm building a shlef now that will replace the back seat, bringing the trunk straight forward to the back of the front seats, then straight down to the floor. The box will fit my 10 on one side, maybe 2 6 1/2" speakers for the midrange (not much there now) and have room for another 10 on the other if ever necessary.

streckfu's951: I've seen this one too, and it's the KLA Industries box.

Funny.
My 84 daily driver is prisitine orginal example right down to the crappy stereo and that is the only thing not working too well. Yep working 100% would an improvement. Even so I often drive in to work in the moring with not radio at all. Nice and pleasant to hear the dull rumble of the NA. The exhaust note of the NA is particular low rumble at moderate RPM that very soothing. Hey my turbo does not even have sound like that. And yes it is the stock muffler and exhaust. Yep lovely sound track. Even so I do turn on the tunes on way home mostly since I tend to get more traffic. That is when I have considered upgrading some, but I hate to hack up the car for it. Right now the rear speakers don't work and I think the front pass door speaker is crapping out. Hmm might be time to do a little something.

I came late to this thread - I didn't read every response to it.

I don't care if you have sub's in your car or not. It's your car, you paid for it, you choose whatever sound system (or NO sound system) for the car.

My GIANT HEARTBURN is having a system that I HAVE to listen to at the stop light or wherever.

Your RIGHT is to play whatever you want, I have the same right.
Your RESPONSIBILITY is to not stomp on everyone else's right to hear silence if that's what they want.

Like I said, I didn't read every response, this may have been said by others. As long as you respect others at stops and in genral going down the road, I couldn't care less if you do whatever. Enjoy yourself, you only live once.

There is something a subwoofer does that nothing else can, reproducing 20-250 Hz frequency sound. Someone doesn't have to crank it up like a ghetto mobile idiot just because they have a sub. Having extra RMS wattage just gives you dynamic headroom so you don't clip your amp and bottom out the voice coil of your subwoofer when you crank it up. I used to rebuild subwoofers after people blow them up because they underpower the subs. Subs are required for any high end system if sound accuracy is what you want to achieve.

I have a sub box with 2 8" subs in the trunk, which is hidden by the trunk pull-over cover. It's not designed to "pound" the hell out of you, nor allow people a mile away to hear the system. Subs are REQUIRED for a well balanced system that can reproduce the music accurately. Your typical 4 speaker setup can not reproduce low frequency sounds with any quality or clarity, without affecting the rest of the frequency range.

That being said, there's really no reason to say that subs don't belong in a Porsche. A track only Porsche? Obviously, you don't want any stereo in there, let alone subs . A lot of people daily drive their Porsches, including myself, and a well rounded stereo system is a must have.

That turbo sound gets tiring after a few months .

I have a 10" sealed Polk Sub, no need for 12 15" subs, our car's hatches are not sealed, so we can use the smaller subs and have a much better response.

i never listen to music in the car, and prefer the sound of a high peformance engine any day. if i could, i would delete any piece of sound equipment in the car, new or old.

in fact, if i was buying a brand new porsche i would delete as many electrical options and gadgets i could. no power seats, stereo, rear wiper, mirrors, windows, locks, etc. straight up driver's car.

now a grand tourer is a different story.

My WOOX adds just enough bass to round out the tiny 4x6's sound. Without it, the stereo sounds totally lame and bass-less.

With the WOOX, and $35 Audiobahn 4x6's, I get a really good clear sound with OK bass. All I can ask for really. Just enough to drown out the hatch rattling...

Hardly...
I have a modest sized 15 year old amp powering 2 channels in my living room (13x23) and I doubt that anyone would want any more bass than what is there now, the best part is that there is no driver larger than 6 1/2" but they're rated down to 36 Hz and Stereo Review got 29 Hz out of them.
