Default Hesitation problem again!

Okay, I had this fixed for a while, but it's back.
I took the car for a drive yesterday, but it was hesitating somewhat until I warmed it up. I noticed the A/F mixture gauge was going nuts. The mixture stayed fine for a second, dipped all the way down, then back to fine agian. Thsi was a constant cycle though.

I have narrowed it down to 2 things:

1. Catalytic Converter
2. Air Flow Meter

Since the O2 sensor is before the cat, I'm thinking it's the AFM ( I have one in there now that I got used and I think it went out). Does anyone have any more input on the subject?

Mine does this every so often, only when it is cold outside and the motor is cold. I KNOW my cat is show, proof is the high NOX level at my e-check (still haven't fixed, waiting to get a bursc testpipe). So that could cause the problem, that would also I think give your O2 sensor weird readings because it doesn't allow the exhaust to flow as well, but that is JUST a guess.

thats true... good point.
The car runs a lot better when it's not humid out, and thats another reason to lean toward the AFM. I'm doubting the cat would care much about humidity and air conditions.

Well, even if the AFM is going bad, what can be done to clean it up or make it run better? I don't want to buy a new AFM at some $400 (might as well go to a maf for that $$). What goes bad on them?

and thats a problem for me - no MAF kit for the N/A. I have no option but to replace the AFM as is. Cheapest I found was $500 with $50 core from paragon.

have you searched for information about opening your AFM and moving the electronic wiper arm inside of it (retracking it)? would that possibly help your condition? I know people do it on their 16V AFMs all the time.. and it seems to help. Also, there are tons of used AFMs on ebay for cheap. you could try one of those first.

the weird thing is, i would think that your AFM would be affected more when it was humid, not less, as in, screw up more when humid. mine does.

I've been through 2 used AFMs.
The first one was dead on the spot (circuit board was corroded big time).
The second lasted about 3 months, then died on me. I'm going for a NEW one if I get one. Mine does screw up a lot more when humid (maybe I posted that wrong before). I've read up on doing the wiper thing, and it buys you time, but usually the AFM is pretty worn by the time you need to do that anyways (like mine is now).

yeah, My air flow meter is dead too... I'm gonna try to play with the air fuel ratio on it first, before I drop $500.00 so that way I'm happy knowing that I tried...

All I have left on the restoration underneath the car is the AFM, a new shift rod, and a high-flow cat. Next is the new carpet, the sub shelf in place of a back seat, then on to the paint/fiberglass front clip (1 piece).

I just want to be able to drive it when it's humid out again since memphis humidity is real bad!!

So, when was the oxygen sensor replaced? That's been my cause for hesitation in 2 different 944 cars - a 1983 and a 944S2. YMMV.

I don't know, thats a lot of miles for an O2 sensor. I am thinking AFM because my O2 is less then 9 months old as well.

How's your idle adjustment screw on the throttle body? Has it backed out? Can you turn it with a flathead screwdriver and see if the idle improves at all?
