Default Might be normal... Should i be worried

Well guys I was opening her up today and some twisty roads near an abandon power factory. I was downshifting from 4th to 3rd after a nice turn and when i got it in third i saw smoke coming from the engine onto the windshield. Pulled over and there is Oil that spilled on the engine near the spark plugs, and went over the back of the engine onto the exhaust which caused the smoke.

This was after an oil change about 250 miles ago in which we added 1/2 a quart extra. It this oil spillage normal during hard use?

Have you sourced the leak? Maybe the cam tower gasket? How is your oil pressure? Does it drop at low rpms? Is the OPRV working properly? Lots of questions.

Clean it off real good and then take it for a drive and see if it's leaking. If so, try to see where from.
Report back after that.

When I drove home the oil pressure was fine. At idle it is between 2 and 3 and when driving its at 5. this happend about a year ago when my idiot friend did a doughnut in the car also... Ill clean it off and take it for a drive later see if it leaks more. Ill tell ya what i find.

That doesn't sound normal to me. I run with 1/2 quart extra oil, and probably pull a lot more g's at an autocross course than your car does/can, and have never experienced that.

It's "kinda" normal on an early car that probably has never had the cam tower gasket replaced. Had the exact same thing happen to my 83 back in August of 1997, at 137K miles. Cost around $300 including parts to have it done at a shop. I posted the invoice break down with labor hours on another thread.

It's not a big deal, just keep checking the oil level and get it done when you have the funds or downtime for the car. Good luck with it.

Hmm i just drove it again and dont see any more oil coming out. Its probally a gasket.

I guess it is normal for my car, when i first got it the engine was covered with about an inch of thick oil and dirt. It looks like it happened before I got it. Ill probally do what Luis says and just replace it when i have downtime.

Yep, all that grime probably held the oil well enough until you started to really push the engine. The cam tower gasket leakage comes from the area you indicate and the smoking smells "toasty" like hot oil.

On the 8V cars it's harder to do because the cam tower needs to come out. On the 16V it's just a Magnesium cover with a rubber gasket that's a relatively straightforward DIY.

In the meantime, if you find a leak on the cam tower gasket, you can clean and apply some copper RTV to hold it temporarily.

Any source of oil leak is NOT normal.

However, there is a breather system which allows a VERY thin amount of oil to be in the intaks, IC pipe etc.

Oil spitting on the engine, or leaking at the front/rear or bottom is not normal.

You added 1/2 quart extra? people who track their cars usually do that, yet they do not get that (?)
