968 Turbo Project is a go......
Well it came up in the thread about the Graphite Metalic 951 that now resides in my garage, but I feel this is noteworthy enough to give the topic its own thread.
The amazon green 968 I picked up just more than a month ago is going to go through a transformation of sorts. Most 968 turbo converstions people put together are high dollar hybrids with lots of different configurations, and while I would love a 3.0L 16V Turbo 968, the costs will keep me from going down that road for quite sometime.
So instead i'm going to use the 2.5L 951 motor as the heart of the transplant, there will be a few issues getting getting all the proper bits under the 968's bonnet, but in the end I think I can have quite the hybrid. With mild tuning at first I hope to make around 300 crank hp and have a sleeper of a 968.
I'm working on getting a hold of a complete 951 driveline right now, and I hope to start this project in a month or two and have the project completed before winter is over......
Some will scream out that this a waste of a 968, but I don't feel that way. The 3.0l 16v motor is fun, but it lacks in appeal of the 951 unit...... And besides, we need a variety out there, so this will be something new in the 944,951,968 world.

boy that 3.0l would live nicely in my S. Wish I could afford it. I have been toying around with the idea of supercharging it bu would be just as happy with a 968 engine in it.

The 968 engine is most likely already sold, one of the reasons i'm going forward with the swap.....
And yes sam one of them will become a track car. I'm thinking putting the 968 interior into the 951, and then making the 968 the trackcar..... but I need to see how things play out further down the line....

I'm glad to see that it's official, Ian! Knowing firsthand how outstanding the fruits of your labor for your last project are, I am certain that this one will be no less unique and exciting! Maybe one day I'll be the proud owner of this project, too. That would definitely be the beginning of a trend: you build them and I buy them.
Good luck and have fun!

Wheres the guy with the "When the boost begins the bull**** ends" avatar.
I think you are doing the right thing. If you want horses and dont have the money for a real 968 Turbo S, doing a 951 swap seems to me to be the only way to go. Youll get twice the punch at half the price of trying to turn that 3.0L into a turbo. Tossing $2000-3000 into a stock 951 alone can make for one diabolically fun car. Add the 968 gizzards surrounding it and I think you are looking at win-win.
I believe Ive found a shortcut however. Get HorsePowerFarm to give you his engine. Just bolt it in and you are good to go mate.

(UDPride, were you at the 944Fest? If so, I certainly regret that I missed you.)

Just out of curiosity, what's different about the 968 vs the 951 interior besides the door panels? From what I remember the last time I saw a 968 everything is the same.

the 94/95 models had 993 style seats, they had a temp gauge in the clock/ sensor was mounted in passenger mirror, clock in a different style gauge panel, some had the cubby thing rather than rear seats..may have just been cabs though (not sure), um....that might be about it.

Yup, US cabs had a rear cubby. Canadian/RoW cars had rear seats available, US cars need three point seat belts so they changed to the cubby. And 968's had no boost gauge, of course, unless it was a Turbo S.
968 Turbo's had 2 valve heads, so you're not far off from being authentic.

I don't get it.. I mean it's fun and all but why?
Once you are in the drivers seat you can't see or feel the difference of a 951 or 968.
Sounds like fun anyway, good luck!
