Sounds like fun anyway, good luck!
I know its a goofy project, and I don't think that most here or anywhere will understand the why. But I enjoy having a project in my life and I know by dropping a 951 driveline into a 968 I havn't created a car that will drive much differently than the 951 I will also have parked in the garage, but it will be my creation and that alone will make it worth while (provided that I don't run into any huge head aches..... )

Hopefully this project will have two offspring...

My 968 Turbo

and

Tifo's 944 3.0 Club Sport

But time will tell, lots of details to work out. (and as a complete side note if things do work out that way, then both cars will have similar hp / weight ratios, 1 hp per 10 lbs......)

Billy,

Honestly I'm looking to find a good deal, there is a car local to me here in Raleigh being parted out and i've been in contact with the owner. Trying to value the driveline of the 951 is difficult because a lot of factors come int play.

But if I could gather most of the parts I need for 2 - 2.5k that would make this project a lot easier, because I know i'll have some expences along the way......

Does the 951 engine drop right into the 968 or will there be fabrication work needed? Good luck!

SM,

Well the motor will bolt right into place, but that is the easy part. There will be a few issues to tackle once the motor is in.

1) Intercooler / Exhaust plumbing
2) Wiring (this is the big one)

Sounds like a great project -- you must have way too much spare time on your hands. Good luck!

Its not that I have too much time, I just like to have a project at home. I'm in the planning stages right now and I think it will take me a few months to get all my ducks in a row. Then there will be the the removal process (which shouldn't really take that long) then the slow process of wiring the car up, putting the new engine in and trouble shooting any issues that come up.....

Over the next 6 months I hope to take care of this.....

Maybe a debut to the world at 944 Fest 2005?

Ian, you can mount the intercooler in the stock 951 location if you remove the 968's hood latch assembly and use pins or weld in a latch system at each front corner of the 968 hood.
I vote for hood pins. Simple, easy, and racy looking.

Pete,

I agree thats the simple solution, and if this car is the one to become the track car (and thats the direction i'm leaning) then that is what i'm going to do. I would want to get some good looking hood pins, maybe like the 944 Turbo cup had, they are sunken into the hood and don't stand out quite as much.....

Ian, too bad you are not very close to me or I can sell the whole entire drivetrain out of my 86 for $2k including the transmission, klr/dme, intercooler/plumbing, complete exhaust, cluster with boost gauge, and everything else to make the thing work. Heck, just let me remove the other parts off the car and you can take the whole chassis with the title too
Sweanders, I believe the torque "feel" is very different between the 2 cars. Its like comparing a 160 hp 350 chevy to a 160 hp Acura 4 cylinder engine. The 951 FEELS slow off the line and requires lots of effort comparatively due to low compression and lag combined with taller 1st gear and 5 speed as opposed to 6.

Lego,

I hope I can get everything put together for 2k. I really think I can, but it may take some time and effort on my part. Hopefully I will find someone here in the VA/NC/SC area that can supply me with all the parts I need......

I'm still undecided on the transmission choice because there are a few ways I can go with this:

1) Keep the 968 6 speed (Drawback here is no LSD)
2) 951 LSD box
3) 944 S2 LSD box
4) 968 6 speed LSD box (ok, only if one falls out of the sky and lands softly in my back yard)

I have an 89 951 needing misc interior/bodywork with 81k miles maybe we can trade so you won't have to do all that swapping
