Question Sand Blasting Cookie Cutters

I'm going to be sand blasting my wheels(cookie cutters) tomorrow before I repaint them. Should I mask off the outer lip of the wheel or sand blast that also? I have talked to a few different people and have been getting mixed answers.

TIA
Anthony

What do you ultimately want to do with them? Paint? Sandblasting leaves cookie cutters very rough, and it is very difficult to polish the outer lip once they have been sandblasted. I know from experience.

Abrasive blasting will ruin the lip for future polishing. Mask them well if you dont want to paint the whole wheel. Remember the polished lips are anodized clear. Use several layers of tape made for blasting, you'll go through any paper tape in a second. I redid mine and used the stripper route. The aircraft stripper will have your centers down to bare aluminum in usually one application. Use a good zinc chromate primer under your new color.

Cookie lips are not anodized clear. They are either painted with clearcoat or powerdercoated with clear. I'm working on stripping some wheels and don't have enough air for my blaster apparently. Anyway, I can strip the anodizing on the Fuchs quite easily, but it won't touch the clear or black on the cookies.

I'd use beads or walnut shells for blasting off paint, not sand...

i'm using aircraft remover. talk about nasty stuff!!! bye bye paint! i'm leaving the lips regular and painting the centers red for the track car. its a PITA to sand the lips... so i gave up - it's not really that important on a track car anyway
