Open the door, hang out and lean on the door (window down) to watch where the tire is on the ramp.

I've used steel ramps quite a bit (924S only, the 944's front valence would catch) and it is a 2 person thing. Ramps are OK, but jackstands are best.

Driving with the door open is a bad idea - too easy to hit it on something. Either do it by feel, get another person to watch, or invest in a $5 mirror. I had a friend that was doing exactly this - trying to get his car up ramps in a driveway (not even a garage) with the door open and rolled back down a bit in the process - smacking the edge of the door (the part where the latch is) into a flagpole. It messed up the latch and then the door wouldn't close - instant $200 repair. NOT a good idea.

Unless you choose an area where theres nothing to hit or pay attention to what you are doing, on all sides. It is easy to become too focused on one thing though.

I've got the Rhino ramps and the depression and the lip at the end makes it very tricky to fall off the end of them - i do need to drive onto some 5/8" bits of plank before the ramps so i have enough clearance (Hint for jyoon!). There is no way i have enough clearance to get my jack under the front of the car - and it is a pain jacking up one side at a time. Rhino's are one of the best $20 i've spent!

I've been using steel ramps for almost a quarter century via the open door method to see where I'm going and haven't "missed" yet. Do not drive to the ramps, set them directly in front of the tires and give them a little kick to get the edge wedged under the tire, then just drive the foot and a half to the top of the ramp while leaning out the window (fold in the mirror). I own 2 sets of steel ramps plus a set of wood ones, 6 jack stands and a bunch of jacks of different types and sizes, all of them have their uses.
