Default clicking sound under the instrument panel?

I have noticed a clicking sound from under the instrument panel, about under the steering wheel when my AC is turned on. It comes about every 10-15 second. It stop when AC is turned off. Like a relay that turns on and off all the time. Is it normal?

Another sound that i wonder about:
I have also found a strange sound from behind the the temperature switch in the instrument panel when i turn the heat on. It comes and goes and sounds like something is "squeaking" or "gnooring". I first thought it was the panel that was loose but it comes now and then as soon as i turn the heat on and disappears when i turn it off.

Any comments about these strange noises?
My car is a -89 Turbo.

Thanks
Dave

it can be one or both of two things.
when you push the AC button...the clutch on the ac engages and spins all the inside components as one.
the clutch engaging has a distinct CLICK sound to it.

also...near the left of the glovebox somewhere in the dash is the climate control sensor thingy. It makes a very small click sound.
jusdging by having the AC on when this happenes and it being on the driver side I say its the AC!

edit---it seems you have both!
its no worrys though.. tipical 80's car noises!

I have the click every 10 seconds when my A/C is on as well. 100% sure its not from the compressor, sounds like a relay.

Doesnt bother me as I dont use the A/C much at all.

i had the clicking sound from my dash- it turned out to be the climate control unit. $400 later, my clicking is gone.
prob'ly not what you wanted to hear, tho.

On a happier note. Mine turned out to be a broken vent. The little one on the left. Drove me crazy, thought it was the speedo. One day I hear it click,click,click...look over to see the little adjustment lever going up and down.. I could never see it, because my hand (on the steering wheel) was always in the way.

Popped in a new vent...no more clicking...

I ALWAYS look for the harder stuff first....

Sounds like some relays pulling a little too hard.

the climate control unit is part of the climate controls in the dash (you know, the thing with the 2 sliders and the rotary fan speed and temperature dials). there's a computer in there that controls the fans and temperature sensor. in my case, the computer had a short or something in it that was causing it to mis interpret the temperature sensor's readings, so it would wildly cycle from heat to cold and back every few seconds.
that's just what happened to mine, though. almost any results can occur if the computer starts to freak out.

there are two solenoids under the dash between the glovebox and the climate control unit. They are there to control the vacuum lines for the various parts of the climate control system. Often what happens (at least in my case) the climate control unit goes bad and you will get a near constant clicking from these solenoids.

My clicking sound is under the panel but on the left side just under the steering wheel as i can hear.
I suppose it is the controll unit anyway.
Is it easy the change the controll unit?
Is it that expensive?

Thanks

Ditto on both.

And if it does bother you too much, just turn up the radio!

Hehe...

The unit is easy to change and possibly expensive unless you find a cheap used one. (a used one can usually be found for around $100) Be careful not to break the brittle plastic pieces covering the dash.
