need help, i will probably break it.
i need experienced help. i rarely post anything but read your list everyday.
i am new to this posting thing.
i have a 1986 951 and 1983 944
on the 951
i have removed the drivers side rear wheel, rotor, stub axle, everything down to
the hub and bearing.
the hub is extremely loose and wobbles a great deal in all directions,
except when i try to pull it out in order to get to the wheel bearing and/or
inspect what damage is in the aluminum housing.
i have already removed the c.v. and axle out of the way.
can i heat up the surrounding housing and use a slide hammer to rip that
hub out of there, or would that be an extremely stupid thing to do?
i don't want to destroy it and i know alot of you have experience with
this rear bearing project.
i did the 83 944 rear bearings and c.v.s and it went smoothly, but not
this car.
please help.
thanks,
rolf morrow

Yes.
Contact Red1 if you want to hear how much easier the job is that way, you can PM him, though I think he is on ships until late tonight.

Thats how I do it. Then I take a slide hammer put it through the brg with a spacer and nut on the other side. A little heat and wahla! When going back together, heat the housing then slide the brg right in with some antiseeze. Heat is your friend. As long as you don't burn the cr&^%#$ out of yourself.

Freeze the bearing THEN slide it in to the hot housing

i going to gently,very gently,try the 13lb.slide hammer.
martin from nz. told me about freezing the bearing, sounds logical.
will i destroy anything else besides the old circlip, slamming that hub and bearing out of there.
i really need to get it back together it is the fastest car in the neighborhood,if not california.

Drifting
Plasma cutter...bad
Propane torch...good.
Red1 did this a couple of days ago and from what I remember of what he told me, get the circlip out first. There is a special tool that you can use to remove the wheel bearing.

FWIW, you should be able to remove the bearing with a slide hammer. I just prefer using "the tool", as it's a lot less dramatic. Set it up, grab the impact wrench, and ziiing. It's out.
(Yeah, I had a ship tonight. This was the first night this week I got home before midnight. Makes for long days when you leave for work at 7 AM everyday.)
