seems like i've heard that the 944 filter is the same as the 4 cylinder vws. that mahle looks a lot like my factory vw filter for my 1.8t (20v turbo 4 cylinder), which is the same as the 2.0 8v too. if its good enough for vw/audi its good enough for my porsche, if indeed it is the same. that may be another source for the filter if there isn't a porsche dealer around. but vw/audi prices aren't any cheaper than porsche's.

does someone know if they are the same?

No, the VW uses a different filter. If I remember correctly the filters on VW I4 engines are usually pretty stubby for clearance sake I guess.

FWIW manning - i use mahle filters on all our 944's, and now on the miata too. for years and years - i've never had a problem with the anti-drainback valve... maybe they had a bad batch and you got stuck with them? i had a problem with ticking after awhile when using a WIX filter i got at napa on the miata; i put a mahle i got from the stealership, and it's been no-tick bliss for me since.

FWIW again - i used WIX filters from napa on the 944 on occasion, and never had a ticking problem, never a dry start... so who knows!?
