Oil Filter for 944?
Hey guys,
I am going to change my oil today
But no one near carries the Mobile 1 oil filter for the 944, and no one near obviously carries the MAHLE one.
So what oil filter is a good one to buy for the 944.
And yes I know I will get a lot of posts that say get the MAHLE.......
What other one?
Thanks as always.

I have used Wix in the past, available at O'Reilly's. And would do so again if I ran out of Mahle.
EDIT: I get through Dallas on a regular basis and stop at Zim's for most parts, since Mahle is cheaper that than locally I buy several at a time.

I have used the Wix filters also (infact im using one right now). Usually its either a Wix or Mahle. I had a Bosch on there a few changes ago, cant find them anymore though. If you have a Strauss Discount auto around you, they have always had the correct size for my 924S.

I have used Mahle twice in the past and thought they were JUNK. Both times I would get the slow oil pressure build after a couple hundred miles on the Mahle filters. I had the same problem when I experimented with using a C&M cartridge type filter setup. On the other hand I have NEVER had that problem with Mobil 1, Purilator or the time or two I used K&N oil filters. I found a place that sells Mobil 1 filter online and may buy a bunch from them to have on hand. Since I have 1 Mahle filter on hand I will give them one more try just to see how it goes before I write them off for good.

Wow Manning i have never had a problem with my Mahles filters. In fact most people here seem to recommend them.
Did you try autozone? If you have those around you they carry mobil one filters...
Good Luck!

Erich,
Yeah, I know most folks on this board recommend the Mahle filters, which is why I decided to give them a shot. Well, that and I can't find Mobil 1 filters for our cars anywhere. So it was with great surprise and dismay that I discovered what junk they really are. Then it clicked in my head how often I see posts about slow oil pressure build and it all made since; the Mahle filters really are junk. Yeah, two bad filters may be a fluke, but that's still a 100% failure rate in my personal experience.
Autozone doesn't stock the Mobil 1 M1-401 filter anymore. I'm not too sure it has been discontinued, they just don't have the part listed as available in their system, nor do they list airfilters for our cars as being in stock very often. Like I said, I think I have an online source, but will double check if they actually have them in stock before I post their addy.

I know its not always the cheapest place but performance products offers the mobil 1 "high efficiency oil filter" for the 944/944T/944S/944S2/924S/968 as part number 911844...Price 10.95 each!
Or a six pack part number 911845 ...Price 52.56!
I think i paid $45 for ten Mahles filters and so far all of them have worked! I have my fingers crossed though...

I decided to cut an old Mahle OC142 open for a look. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but based on a Fram I cut open from my Supra, this filter is better quality. I've also cut a Purolator open and thought it was good except for the string that was mentioned on that big oil filter web-site. The filter media end caps are made of metal and are glued in place. The filter media(which measured 3.75 inches high) is joined together by a strip of metal crimped on. The internal check valve is a good design. There was still alot of oil in the filter and I let it drain for weeks. The big bypass spring is stiff so there's no doubt to me the internal sealing of the Mahle works. I've got a Purolator on my 951 now and I'm curious to cut it open. The Purolator has the same style check valve which is visible thru the center hole.

Here is a link to an engine oil filter study: http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfi...dy.html#m1-301
Personally, I would try to get a Hastings or a Baldwin filter. I use Amsoil SDF-36 filter for both 944's because I run their oil as well. I liked the K&N oil filters, especially the large 1" nut on top for easy on and off.
Take care!

STP's filter is the same as the Porsche OEM that you get if you buy them from the dealer. Porsche NA does not use Mahle. And the best thing is its only $4.99 available commercially. I think I got mine at autozone. Don't believe me? Buy an STP and a Porsche brand and compare. They are the same right down to every little stamping. The Porsche OEM even says "made in usa" which is another sign it is of course not mahle, and probably made for porsche by another company. STP.
If its good enough for Porsche NA, get it and screw the Mahle.
