Default 968 -- rare? Awsome? Not a real Porsche?

I'm a new 968 owner.

The 911 has always been my dream car
I started off looking for a 911, but couldn't find one in my price range that didn't require a lot of work. We drove a few 1985-1986 with the 915 Gearbox problem. Next time out, my wife came with me. she was very paitient with the 915 gearbox problem, the lack of AC in the Florida Heat and the Fuel leak.

then
We test drove a 1992 968 (high miles, but excellent condition and excellent maintenance including new timing belt and AC). To my surprise, she said "Buy it!" So we did!

Daily Driver
The car immediately became my daily driver.

Future Maintenance
It runs so well, I can't believe my good fortune. Am I setting myself up for a high unexpected maintenance bill by driving it every day?
Thanks,
Tony

I vote "OTHER" -

Most overpriced 944 model.

Don't get me wrong, I'd trade my 944S in for an equal 968 any day. I would not spend the x-tra money to sell my 944S just to get a 968. For the difference, I'd much rather have a 928.

pinnacle of the 924/944 line of cars although not quite as powerfull as a turbo S.

"Don't waste my time with your poll, I'm a 911 owner"
There are VERY few 911 owners down here in the basement.. perhaps you meant 944??

IMHO, for the price I'd be looking for a 951.. and have some cash left for improvements/ PM. BUT that is my opinion.

It is a difference from a looks standpoint- the 968 is dead sexy, and the front end actually looks like a "different" better recognized Porsche.

I'm not gonna vote because I don't like the options..........

But, congrats on your purchase! A fine choice, and one that your wife will happily drive if need be.

Please don't become like a lot of other 968 owners that I know that care about "how many Zermatt Silver cars were made in 1992" or "My deviated carpet is a rare option" or "where can I re-order the factory rubber gloves that go under the bonnet?".............

I love the 968. I think they are the best overall of the 924/944/968 line. They have all the things I love about the 944 series, with modern looks, features, and drivetrain. I was lucky enough to get a ride in Bill Foster's car at 944Fest, and I was hooked. My next Porsche will definately be a 968. Sure, you can't get the same power aout of them as you could with a 951 (unless you had lots of $$$ lying around and decided to turbo the '68), but as far as the overall package goes, I'd take the 968 over the 951.

PS- if anyone knows any good condition 968s for sale for less than $15K, let me know!

what a cool site! I'm a new member, I made my first post and in minutes people are checking it out.

In response to overpriced: I agree the original sticker was high ($45k-$55k USD). In fact, the 1992-1993 Car and Driver and Road and Track articles stated so. But the same magazines also rated it higher than the Corvette, 300ZX, Mazda, and other performance cars of the same period. They also said Porsche finally got it right keeping the 944 handling but improving the 944 S3 engine (with the vario cam).

Thanks for the RSVPS!

I was talking about the used prices.

Since you can get a damn good 951 S for around $10k or under (yes you can, don't argue and tell my you can't) and my 944S is worth around $5k - $6k. I don't see why 968's are not somewhere between the two. I undertand they are not a 944 to most people. They are newer and some feel that makes them better.

But when you start seeing them sell for $11k - $15k, no thanks, I'd rather have a 928S4 instead.

Tifo - That was great...re-order the factory gloves.

Welcome to rennlist PSU 968, sounds like you have a very solid car there. What type of work has been done to it? These cars can always seem like a steal until neglected work catches up to you. For the 968 you have the standard timing belt work every 30K miles(done in your case), clutch sometime over 90K. Issues in the 6spd tranny have been reported, i cant remember what part it is. And also over 100K miles one should open up the head and take a look at the variocam parts and pieces. I'm not a 968 owner there are just a few in the family

Again welcome!
Erich

They are a white nylon/cloth mixture available from any dealer. What's funny is when you also order the plastic bag they are supposed to go in, a seperate part number. When you get it, it's in another plastic bag. So it's a plastic bag neatly folded inside another plastic bag and it cost like $10. only Porsche

I bought both for my father after he bought his '94 Coupe, along with the grey plastic enclosure they go in. All kinda useless, but now the car is "more complete"

The funny thing about the price is that the 968 actually had a lower MSRP than the 944S2 that it replaced.
The 968's were the best of the 4 cylinder front engined watercoolers. If not for that pesky 911 having to be top dog we coulda had plenty of 968 Turbos on the used market now.

Uhh... you don't?

The 968 is a newer car by 3-5 years. I will grant that the 951S represents the outer-envelope performance zenith of the 924/944/968 series, but the 968 is close on its heels in terms of performance and a generation ahead in terms of design.

By your criteria a 964 should cost around $10k.

Now... where can I find that 951S for $10k, cause I'm ready to get on a plane

Great cars, to drive daily I think it is the best of the 944 series with the S2 being next. For sheer fun/terror, make mine a turbo. Depends on the use of the car.

Pete - you are creeping up on 5K posts there buddy, scary!

PSU - you go to or affiliated with PSU? My sister starts her grad degree there in August.

You know.. I just wish I had more money!

It's good they are not bottoming out like 944s in price! They are much more rare. Having one is that much better! Congrats on the car.. beautiful and the best of the 944 tech.
