968 -- rare? Awsome? Not a real Porsche?

The 951, particluarly the S, is a fabulous car. I was merely confused that anyone would think a 968 should cost somewhere between a 944S and a 951S. Price and value is not merely a function of go power - which the S has in spades.

Most underrated Porsche.
My 968 cabrio was one of the finest cars I've ever owned. For what I paid, ~$11k, certainly the most bang for the buck of any p-car. Modern looks and amenities, great weight distribution and not alot of them out on the road.
I love 'em all, but I'll always have a soft spot for my 968.
Cheers!

All seriousness aside, I agree. If it wasn't for Porsche's management desire to keep the 911 the top dog, they could have built so much more into these cars.
Could you imagine the impact of a 300 HP N/A car in 1992 ( the 968) of even a turbo 4 banger pushing 300HP in 1986? The potential was easily there.
I really wish that Porsche had pursued the turbo 968 as a street car. If you put on the same mild upgrades that are added to the 951s now onto a 968 turbo, 450HP would be easy.
I drool just thinking of the potential.....Makes me want to build a 3.0ltr turbo..

Look at the tech they had with the 924 GTS in 1980!! ! That should have been the engine that the 944 got to start.

To demonstrate my appreciation for the 968, I relay this story.
I flew out to Denver a month ago to pick up a 1993 Amazon Green Coupe. The drive home was pure bliss, and I could see myself never parting with that Amazon beauty. When my father saw it, however, it was love at first sight, so I ended up selling it to him. Although it was tough to let it go, I am so happy that my father is back in the Porsche fold again. He pampers it just the way I would have. Since I sold it to my father, I haven't stopped thinking about getting another one. I recently bought Ian's awesome 951 (going to pick it up in a couple weeks), but I still find myself looking for another 968. In fact, there is a chance that I will re-join the ranks of 968 owners in a few days. That is how much I appreciate the 968!

Question for those who have driven both an S2 and a 968...
Is the power difference that apparent? When shopping for my car I originally wanted a 968 Cab but could never find one at a decent price. Although I love my vehicle I always wonder what if???

I looked at a local S2 cab for sale recently, 30K miles. You do feel the difference in hp, but mostly you feel the difference in the gearbox. The 968 gearbox feels tighter and closer in the 968. Overall the 968 felt tighter, I don't know if that has to do with the Neckarsulm/Stuttgart assembly being different-but it may.

In summary, both the S2 and 968 are wonderful cars, and it is great fun enjoying their individual nuances of personality. In fact, I hope to add a 968 to the stable in the next couple of days.

The Variocam really transforms the 3.0 liter engine at higher revs. Both cars have lots of power down low, but the 968 is transformed above 4000 as the Variocam kicks in - sounds cool as well.
As Damian mentioned, the 6 speed Getrag in the 968 is smoother and engages much more postively when you are shifting quickly.
All that said, the S2 was always a kick in the pants to drive.
