How can you tell what fuse wire is what?
I pulled up the fuse box because I need to make sure that 12v is going from fuse 7 to pin 12 on the brake booster 14 pin connector (944 side) to make sure that 12 volts is getting to the 968 side (which I'm told powers the DME).
Under that fuse box are a billion wires... I don't want to go yanking things apart, so is there an easy way to tell what wire under there goes to what fuse?
Thanks,
Matt

I'm not sure if I am reading the question correctly, but you should be able to take your multimeter and see if there is continuity between fuse 7 and pin 12. If there is continuity, then you can just check to see if fuse 7 is getting 12 volts.
Harbor Freight has a multimeter for 3.99 if you are need of one.

Pin 7 is getting 12 volts only upon cranking the car (not when you turn the key to on).
I must be missing something, because I show continuity between fuse 7 and ground, most all the pins, etc., fuse 8, ground, pin 12...
Does anyone have a bazooka?

Matt, I don't think it was neccessary to pull the fuse box. I don't have access to the site you had me looking at last night, but I thought it was clear as to what pins you needed to check.
Did you get a test light yet? Don't waist your time with a volt meter. KISS.

I took my fuse box apart (early 83) and the way it is set out is mind boggling, nothing is as it would seem, made up of several layers. unlikely to be an internal fault in the fuse box, however if it's the later type box I can't help any.

Stephen,
I was trying to make sure that fuse 7 was indeed pin 7, going to pin 12 (or whatever the heck pin it was). Pins, fuses, I hate them all now.

by the brake booster, the 14 pin connector’s pin 12 (red) in the original 968 engine harness mates to the 14 pin plug from the original '89 944 body harness which should have a 'empty' pin 12.
per Todd Holyoak's chart he says you need to run a wire from FUSE 7 to this PIN 12 to supply +12volts to pin 12 (red) of the 968 engine harness. (this is the key switch ‘30’ or run position, to supply 12volts for the 968 DME when key is 'on').
VERY IMPORTANT: on the 14 pin connector by the brake booster...PIN 7 should NOT have 12volts during starting. it should be left 'open' (cut and tape the 12v source wire). this is because the DME relay pin 85 is already grounded in the 944 body harness and because we don't want to feed 12volts into the 968 DME on that pin!
MATT CUT THAT RED/BLACK WIRE !
