Smile When good O2 sensors go Bad

Well I've had this niggling problem for a year now...when cold my car always felt like the timing was screwed up....I'd accelerate and I get this long flat spot in power...then it would simply go away and run fine. Though I did occasionally get a little flat spot when warm it wasn't terribly bad. But that first cold run was getting really annoying...especially leaving work and trying to merge into traffic!! So I checked vacuum hoses, tuned her up, ran injector cleaners, put new gas and air filters in...you name it.

Well, I was due a new O2 sensor at this oil change. Put it in last night...and guess what? The flat spot has vanished!!! Best $50 I've spent yet!!

Hey while we are on the topic.. can someone let me know what 02 sensor to use.. the cheapest in other words. I remember there being a part number one you can get at like autozone or something that you have to splice wires. Which was that? My exhaust is still out and i'm going to change that for the hell of it before it goes back in.

I read someone on here used a Bosch unit out of a Windstar.
I'm just going to pull mine and give it to my brother at Advance so he can find one that matches right. I'm into the whole "make sure you get the right part the first time" thing. I have a 1 wire, so it's going to be different from the later one you probably have, but I'll post a part number when I stop being lazy and actually get it.

I'm planning on replacing mine soon as well. Please post what sensor you end up using.

I bought the generic Bosche 3 wire unit with the wiring kit from Paragon...$54.61. The wiring kit was pretty cute...worked just fine.

to avoid shipping from Paragon, try Autozone. Bosch part #15726 is only $41.99 and it is the newer version of Paragon's #15725 Bosch oxygen sensor. The universal o2 sensor contains everything you need to re-wire and make your own harness to support any and all Universal O2 sensors from Bosch.

Does the turbo O2 sensor differ from a late model 944?
What are other symptoms of a bad O2 sensor?
After I hooked up my a/f gauge, I've noticed that the a/f ratio NEVER stays constant, it always bounces around, even when idling. Is this is a sign that I need a new one?

If it is, can we splice wires on the 3 wire O2 sensors, or do we have to route the entire harness through the car?

Thanks

I can understand the "porsche" mark up at perhaps auto parts stores, but online stores that do mostly porsche business...?

I was just half-joking when i said that... I really don't know why. It's probably a little more complex than a regular car's 02 sensor. Or its because most mass produced cars have generic sensors, and ours (and range rovers) are not generic, causing the price to go up in itself.

Just thought to check before i went to autozone.. its 64.95 or somehting for 15726, and 15725 is 53.95 or around there. Is it fine to use the 15725 because it's cheaper? what is so updated about it?

pearldrum944: just go to AutoZone. When they look it up, you get the option for the $17.97 Bosch 11027 single wire unit. Since we have 83s they don't use the 3 wire units that are on later models. instructions are in the box and include a piece of heat shrink tubing. You'll need a 22mm wrench, wire strippers, and a lighter.
