19MM socket on a 1/2" drive with a 16" breaker bar.

Go very slowly, I just did it this morning.

Good luck!

Also, follow Clark's Garage advice to tap bolt head with a hammer to "wake it up" as it is in the aluminum bell housing.

GL again!

Or try connecting two wrenches together by slipping the boxed end of a wrench over one of the "prongs" on the open end of the wrench on the bolt. Anything to get more torque on the bolt...

I remember that someone had to put a floor jack on a breaker bar to break the starter bolts loose.

put a 4-6 foot long pipe over your breaker bar & just lift up on it from out from under the car. Just make sure the socket is on the bolt good as SOMETHING is going to break free .

where do you people work on your cars that you can get a 6 foot long pipe on it? For some of us it isn't that easy. I have been messing with the bolts for awhile too, but all i can do is get the car not even 2 foot off the ground...how am i supposed to get a breaker bar in that??

I usually use the box wrench while slowly pushing on it with my foot... my leg is substantially stronger than my arm

That would work although one of my personal faves is a $5-$10 length of black pipe from Home Depot - about 3 ft. long. They fit nicely over the handle of either a 3/8 or 1/2 drive rachet. You can get 'em in different lengths too - 1', 2', 3', 4'. If you need more than a 4' length of pipe, I think you're thinking about drilling and cutting though - most likely the bolt head will bust before it'll take that torque!

Heating the area gently with a torch might work too - but be careful - there's flammable stuff near there!

I've popped them loose by putting a box end on 'em and tapping the wrench near the open end with a big hammer. Worked for the torque tube bolts too.

This is why I swear by anti-seize compound at instalation time!

Leverage, persistance, strong tools, and don't bring the car down on ya!

Good luck!

An air impact wrench is obviously the best way. Next best is hand tools and impact. Big pipes tend to break things imo.

I'd never put torch on on a closed block, even lightly. Too great a risk of explosion.

There is not a lot of room for an air impact without a wobble, and that's not a very smart configurtation. A good combination wrench and a few taps with a hammer works great and is easy to use under the car.

As long as your wrench fits well the impacts (from a hammer or impact wrench) are better at busting things loose, I feel, than the straight torque that you get from a long bar.
