The cams in my 944S were welded and reground to stock specs for $450 each as opposed to $875 each new. So I hope mine stay together, 15k so far and no problems.

10lbs off the crank reduces the inertia of the crankshaft. Less weight allows it to rev quicker. Usually a race modification. Our cars shut off fuel at closed throttle and without the flywheel effect of that 10lbs they will stall before returning to idle if you are at speed and let off the accelerator and I suppose you would have to be in neutral. Of course Danno and other chip makers can solve this problem. Re polishing the journals does not take off this much material! These lightened cranks are referred to as knife edge cranks and can be seen on ebay once and awhile.

I don't have the part number. I actually never even touched the cam, it shipped direct from JME to my mechanic. I do know that we definitely used lash caps, they were an OE part for an Alfa Romeo engine. I had to call all the shops within 200 miles to find some in stock.

I received the cam in the summer of 2000. So it was 4 years ago. I just checked JME's site, says he dyno tested his cams in 97-98. So the 6 year timeframe seems to be panning out. It seems like I have a cam that was tested against either of these...

Tested against all comparable competitors camshafts and proven better.

PH 277-14 for 944/928
Best power band 4000-6600 rpm. 900 rpm idle. .474 cam lift (In & Ex) with stock base circles for drop in performance. Uses stock or 944 Turbo valve springs for best results. Motronic chip must have rev limit raised for best results. 14-20 bhp over stock camshaft with non-stock exhaust. Needs stock (37 psi.) fuel system pressure with Motronic at click 1. Tested against all competitors camshafts and proven better. None were comparable.


So I'd say the cam I have has at most .474 lift and maybe a max of 12 hp, probably less.

John, if you'd like I would certainly be willing to trade you my cam for one of your new ones!

Nah.

You absolute DO NOT need that flywheel effect. The rest of the drivetrain (connected to the ground through the tires) will keep the engine from stalling.

The old cam we used to sell that needed lash caps etc , really needs an advance key . Advance that camshaft 4 degrees and it will bring back the low speed power. Do a cranking compression test and compare it to a known number for a similar eingine. then compare it after advancing the cam.
With the new castings we build the advance in when its ground, no need for the offset key.
I am willing to design something new if I can get some feedback. Some real specs on the popular cams, not just a .474" lift number. and some rwhp dyno sheets. most of our N/A cams were originally blueprint IT SCCA cams...
I also have access to the old Delong masters + model cams, there might be something of interest in that stuff too.

If someone is aware of a cam grind that will give me more bottom end performance, I would be interested in hearing about it. Not keen on more rpm... dont want to run it over 6500.

The SCCA IT cam was the same as stock. Sorry if I made it look like it was a cheater cam. Doing a blueprint grind , I find the best factory lobes I can, and then make my master cams.

For the early (non-scca) 944 N/A I would use the later lobes This was a good upgrade for an N/A car with the early cam. For the later (non-scca) N/A cams we have a little hotter set of masters.

A new or modified camshaft is one possibility for more power in my 1987 924s. What are the pros and cons of this mod? The Webcam part is $440 and installation is $1,100.

Technically they are still illegal, but there is almost certain to be wording in the rules next year to allow aftermarket exact replacement parts. The way the rules are currently worded, even aftermarket replacement rotors are illegal and that's just nuts.

Since they will be legal next year... I may be interested in a blueprinted late cam.

Hmmm, interesting... If you are modeling and 'blueprinting' your cams after profiling a series of stock lobes, theoretically you can replicate only the 'good' lobes onto all cylinders of your custom cam, eh??? What are the chances of finding a Porsche cam with all 8 lobes having the best profile in all 8 position???

I want a cam for my 1987 924S, I was thinking about a Miledge one, But I have alot of intake and exhaust mods so I really am not sure if I should go with this one or another one, I would really like something with a 3,000-6500 rpm power band, Any ideas??

I talked to John Milledge and he said to use his cams its best to have good intake and exhaust mods...free-flow exhaust at best and then of course increasing compression with the head if possible...but the first camshaft listed on his site has the main power band from 3300 to 6500 i believe...maybe that would work for you?

Yea looks like the best one, I was looking at Elgin cams there performance cam has a .455 lift on intake and exhaust, Milledge has a .474 on intake and exhaust, SO Im thinking the more lift the better, Right??

Not necessarily.

As with most things, it depends. Too much lift for the rest of your configuration could hurt other things.

I only know enough about cams to be dangerous. I think there's only one person in this thread with enough knowledge to speak truly intelligently about this topic. You could also call Milledge and discuss your exact mods and perhaps get a suggestion from him regarding mods to make his cam more effective.
