Default Early wiring for 83 NA car

Good evening gents..I am still working on the under dash wiring on my ‘83. I searched the R list database, for early car wiring data, but came up short on info. Has anyone at anytime in the past or present put together a work/spreadsheet or list of wires as to where they start and finish, verbally? Trying to sort through the schematics is making my head hurt. I have new wires that were provided for in my new harness, but have no idea where they might go. It’s pretty slow going, but tracing down the origin and terminus of a cut blue wire with a white tracer, for instance, is a real puzzle. ( I think that wire is probably for gauge illumination). Any ideas or comments would be welcome. TIA.😀

There is a blue/white wire going from the headlight/dimmer/flasher stalk switch to the blue light in the instrument cluster (the one with the fuel gauge) that tells you your brights are on.

Thanks, for the info. Since it apparently hasn’t been done before, I’ll work on an information sheet as to underdash wiring origins and terminals. Then I’ll post it perhaps with pics as I slog along. Thanks

@Tiger03447 That is gonna be a huge help for sure!

I am about to dive in and work on repairing my dash harness on my ‘83 as well so we might be able to collaborate and cross reference if needed.

I just got the car last month and don’t know its history, but it looks like I have the same issue that you encountered. That fog light double relay must’ve gone bad and caused a short as I have the singed connectors dangling down with the PO’s attempt at a fix with a mess of electrical tape.

Yep! That’s what happened to me too. I opened up the main harnesses and now have a giant mess. I bought a new harness but it’s only set up as a ROW (Rest of world) car with no AC and only one fan. Mine has A/C and two fans. I have to rewire all the dash and the console. I’ll be glad to help if I can. I have gone into the aux fuse panel and restored that. I will publish that soon with pics and a verbal sheet.😀

Hopefully adapting the new harness isn’t too terrible. Thanks for the help, looking forward to your results!

I obtained the new Harness from 944Online. It did the coil, all the forward lights, pop up headlamps, wiper motor and horns. There is separate harnesses for the console, one for the dash and another for the rear end of the car. AFAIK, all these are pretty much NLA. There is another one, for the engine itself , injectors and so-on, more oriented to the DME. I think Lindsey racing may make those, but I could be wrong.😀

I found a good deal on a pretty good condition used engine harness to replace mine as there was some damage to mine and the grounds to the bell housing were cut off. I haven't gone through and inspected the forward and rear harnesses yet. Currently working to remake my positive battery cable as mine is very corroded with rusted bolts so I can't get consistent voltage to the systems to really test functionality. I could probably get by with just crimping on a new lug, but I figured if it's worth doing it's worth overdoing!

But yeah, my first thought was to try and buy a new dash harness for our year. That was until I saw that they were all around $1500 for what I could find.

You might try DC machinist.com for a new battery cable. He has several different ones.

I picked up two used harnesses from DC auto.. pretty decent, but also with burned spots/areas in them. Not usable, but good for reference as to where the wires go. Perhaps you need to obtain a free download of the wiring diagrams out of the workshop manual for the early cars. Also you need to get a free copy of the PET… (replacement parts) if you don’t have one already. Our cars suffer from marginal wire diameters, so Porsche upgraded all the wires to a heavier gauge when they went to the 85.5+ ( later) cars.

I have the '83 current flow diagrams which I have found to be more a little more helpful than the ones that were in the Haynes manual I have. The PET has been very helpful for sure for identifying some components. Luckily, I have access to everything I would need to remake my battery cable at work and if I do, I will go to a larger gauge. But if I can't manage it or don't have everything that I need then I will be going for a DC Machinist one.

Default Early wiring..’83

Here are a couple of shots of the rear of the re-arranged wiring on my aux fuse panel and what powers what fuse. Lotsa jumpers going from one fuse position to the next. The verbiage is broken down into upper and lower sections. The “upper” refers to the upper fuse terminal and similarly the “lower” is the lower fuse connection and possibly where it goes off to . Hope this helps some😀

The top two are of the rear of the aux panel. The bottom is the explanation.😀

Looks like from your picture, that someone has made repairs to that section of the harness. Also it appears that the harness sleeve has been opened up for inspection. I use 4” tie wraps to try to keep things somewhat organized since I have removed all the harness wrappings. Be advised, that the double relay for the fog lights is on the wrong side of the fuse. They ran the wiring direct to the relay and then to the # 8 fuse. Later cars corrected this with their much expanded relay and fuse panel and heavier gauge wiring. As far as the main fuse/relay panel goes, the wiring blocks (6)are labeled A-F. Each one has a tiny number beside each of the molex plug. You may need a magnifier to see the numbers. They are numbered right to left. So when you look on the schematic, you might see a note that says G11. That is the plug G(on the main panel) and wire#11. The plugs only fit in the panel one way, so their panel position is foolproof. Hope this helps some.😀
