Default new Koni rear coil-overs

New and Exclusive product from Paragon Products - Koni Sport Double-Adjustable, Height-Adjustable Rear Coil-Over Kit - $700/complete

Our special package includes 2 Koni Sport Cup externally double-adjustable shocks with hardware and Hypercoil 2.25" I.D. springs.

This kit is designed to work WITH torsion bars. Also, it is very likely that you will have to reindex the torsion bars to achieve proper ride height and preload. This kit does not use spherical bushings and cannot use the Racer's Edge lower bolts without modification. This kit is available with spring rates from 150-700 lbs/in.

Thanks!

Wow. That's a great price on those! I assume they sit on the car in the way that they are oriented in the photo? So the adjuster is accessible at the bottom? Great design. I'd love to hear from someone who buys these, a little feedback would be great to hear. I'm certain that since they are Koni and Paragon is selling them they are nice..................

Skip-

Very pretty! Do these use the factory lower bolt to mount to the arm?

Cheers,

Very nice! I love the position of that adjuster. I agree, some feedback from some of the first buyers would be great.

These rear koni coilovers are the old style double adjustables that were used on the US Spec Escort Cars and Firehawk Club Sports, and have been out of production for several years. What I heard was that a large left over inventory/stock of these shocks was recently located and released into the market.

Skip, does that sound right and is Paragon responsible for finding these?

A friend of mine purchased a set through a local shop (not sure who they bought them from), and we installed them with helper springs this past wknd.

They are not installed inverted like some newer setups, so the body of the shock is down with the adjustment **** facing towards the transmission (center of the car). As you can see in the picture, they have the standard rubber bushing type upper and lower mounts, not spherical bearings, so they do use the standard/stock upper and lower bolt. If you use a helper spring, you have to drop the rear suspension and reindex the torsion bars. And depending on spring rates, you may end up needing a 7” rear spring instead of 8” to keep from bottoming out the lower perch and having the perch and spring rub on the trailing arm.

They are a very nice coilover and the quality of the perches and jam nut is very good. I think they are a great setup for the money. I remember several years ago, on offshoot of Kelly Moss Racing (a place called Fast Tech) was selling these for $700 a pop, so that price for the pair is a good deal.

I see they are for 85.5+. I believe the only difference between 83-85 and 85+ is the bottom bolt size. The bolt is smaller on the 83-85. If you could supply a bolt that fits or a sleeve that fits into the hole you could open up that product to a wider market. Just a thought.

I know a guy that installed a complete suspension (this same style double adjustable front struts and rear coilovers) out of an '86 Turbo Club Sport on his 83 944, and he replaced/upgraded the entire suspension to the 85.5-86 model aluminum control arms, trailing arms, spindles, etc. Major undertaking.

I did the same thing. Except I didn't do the coilovers yet. I do notice a difference in handling....for the better

Hi Skip,

A few questions:

(1) Why do you have to use them with torsion bars (i.e. why can they not be installed in a coil-over only configuration)?

(2) What is the matching front shock (I'm guessing the 8641-1414S but...)?

Karl.

I dont see a reason that they cannot be used as a coilover only for T-Bar delete.

I dont know the model number of the equivalent front strut, but you can get them through Paragon. The original off the shelf dbl adj koni struts I believe have gone the way of the dinosaurs also, but I think Paragon is having koni perform the custom valved double adjustable setup upon request.

Indeed. Jason showed them to me last year. A really sweet double adjustable coilover built into a late strut. The price at the time was $500 each IIRC.
