Will a 951 clutch fit 944?
Hey guys,
I have the opportunity to buy a low K clutch that is off of an 87 951 and install it on my 86 944 na. What I am wondering is if it will all fit? Do I need to do any modifications? Will it all bolt up to the stock flywheel?
thanks for your help

No it will not fit. The flywheels are different and the clutch is different diameter. Also the clutch fork is different as the throw out bearing is different. You will have to change the flywheel, clutch kit, and the clutch fork at the same time. There may possibly be differences in where the crank sensor studs are located so you have to compare the 2 flywheels side by side.

Given the gargantuan pain in the *** it is to install a clutch, why would you bother to go through all that to install a used one anyway? Just spend a little extra and get a decent new one and do the job right. These cars are all about "pay a little today or a lot tomorrow".

Porsche-O-Phile, are you using a Callaway turbo conversion kit on your NA? Just curious. I strongly believe my 83' still has the NA clutch. Are the 951 bellhousing the same part number? I seen some for sale at Hershey but they were the same number as both my 83' and 84'. BTW: There is a very likely SPEC clutch kit group buy on the 951/S forum...it is at a standstill as of now waiting for finalized pricing details but should pick back up here on Monday.

The bellhousings are not the same. One ends in 4R and the other is 2R - I can't remember which now. The reason is that Porsche moved the starter mount holes over a few thousandths for the ring gear change.
You can bolt a turbo housing on an NA, but you will NOT be happy when you turn the key the first time.

"What happens to the people who have 944NA blocks but with 944 turbo internals? What clutch can they use in their cars?"
The crank on the 944 and 951 are the same. The clutch is determined by what flywheel you bolt to the crank. Once the clutch is on, you have to use the matching clutch-fork, TOB, bellhousing. The other thing is the 944 uses a 130-tooth ring-gear while the 951 uses a 132-tooth gear. Can't swap them or else you'll throw the computer off.
