So, I pull into a local convenient store yesterday and there were about 8-10 corvettes lined up (must have been an event somewhere close by) and the owners were all standing by their vettes BSing and they all stopped and turned heads to check out my 944.....then one of the wives said "wanna race?".....I got out and chuckled a bit and said "well you can take me in the straights but I'll take you in the curves"......thought that was funny

Pretty funny. My neighbor is president of a local vette club (hence my avatar) and has frequent gatherings. A few months ago I was washing my car and few of his buddies were in front his place and asked me if I wanted to race.
My response was "how much money do you have in your pocket and how many length's do you need me to give you". His buddies laughed at him for not taking me up on the offer and I then challenged him to a DE day with the loser paying the winner's entry fee. Pretty much ended the conversation. For some reason the shop vac sound my car makes when the turbo spools tends to intimidate those guys. Chumps!

If those Vettes were C5's, I dunno know about your 944 n/a taking them in the curves.... The C5 is a decent handling car, and the C6 is even better.

The current model 'Vette (C5) will out accelerate, out corner, out stop just about anything on the road with a list price under $80k. Sorry, its the truth. Thinking that 10 to 20 year old technology can hang with the new Vette is just wishful. I've driven both the standard and the Z06, and they are incredible rides. Now, the earlier models, especially the C3's are a different arguement. I'm certain that a good example of a 944T could embarrass the same model year 'Vette. A 944na could probably out corner and hang with the C3 's. The C4 was a step in the right direction, but still does not compare with the C5. If the next generation (C6) is another giant step forward, the the boys at Stuttgart have a real challenge ahead. Build quallity is up and dollar for dollar, you cannot buy a better handling (stock) car. It just the truth, guys. Accept it! The new porsches are pricing themselves out of the market. If I had a new GT3, I'd be afraid someone would scratch it. Yea, I'd be a $100k paranoid. (but, I'd be a happy paranoid!)

I have no problems admitting that C-5's are nice cars (altho the constant rattling and squeaking would get on my nerves), but I disagree that a standard issue C-5 will beat a 951 without reservation. I have passed enough of them on the track to be convinced that a standard C-5 and a fairly stock 951 are pretty equivalent packages (give the C-5 a slight edge on the straight, and the 951 the same in the corners). It has a WHOLE lot more to do with the driver of said car.
A Z-06 is another story... a built 951 won't be embarrassed by one, but it certainly won't embarrass the Z-06, either. Again, tho, the driver will make a bigger difference in this scenario than the car will.
I am definitely not very impressed with the interior build quality of the C-5 in general tho. Its a nice car otherwise.
Regards,

so i was flying around in my new Apachie helicopter, and a F-15 pulled up to me at a stop light. he asked if i wanted to race, i said sure. then i said the finish line is 1000 ft behind us. he flicked me off ans sped away.
moral of the story (not really). comparing cars can be fun, but dont speak too loudly unless you know for sure what your car and the other car are capable of. i am not a big fan of vettes. but i was impressed with there 1st and 2nd in GTS at le-mans

Car and Driver does their Supertuner challenge every year. Last year, they also tested a stock 996 TT and a z06 around their course. The 996 was BARELY faster, even slower in some sections of the course.
The corvette is a very formidable opponent. And its 1/2 the price of the porsche. You can say it squeeks and rattles all you want, but we know porsche's build quality isn't what it used to be 20 years ago.

Why do all the corvettes that you guys never rode in squeak and rattle, but my fourth generation Camaro Z28 with with a solid axle, the super stiff level 2 SS suspension, and super stiff revalved for the track (not drag strip) as in too stiff for the street Bilsteins that I drive on New York City streets on a regular basis not squeak or rattle at all?
And instant torque at all rpm's is nice, very nice, none of that lag stuff you have to worry about.

A friend bought a Z06 two weeks ago. Not a bad ride for $45K new. I took it for a ride and my only complaints would be the visibility and the 6-speed tranny. The 944's have much better visibility. In the Vette, it is like driving while looking through a narrow slit. Looking back, well, that's what mirrors are for.
The 6-speed has the 1-4 lockout thing for fuel economy. Not much of a problem since you can start out in second gear can go past 80 before you hit the redline. 405HP and 3200lbs really make shifting optional - even boring. The titanium exhaust was a little loud but I could have gotten used to it.

I'm not talking about a hypothetical car, I am am talking about three different C-5's that I have had multiple occasions to ride/drive. They ALL rattled and squeaked. And its not the roads here in KC being too rough, I've spent plenty of time across the US , the roads on LI and NJ are no better than the roads in the midwest.
My 20 year old car doesn't rattle as much as a 3 yar old car. If it did, I would be fixing it. As for newer Porsches, they don't apply to this conversation, altho I agree that the fit/finish isn't as good as it used to be for Porsche either.
