Default OT: First time driving stick

Well, last night was the first time I had ever driven a manual car. I drove my friends '93 RX-7 that has about 350RWhp.

He set the turbo's up so they both hit around 4k. Man, that car is crazy fast. At first I was going to shift be the seat of my pants, just based on sound. As soon as the turbo's hit I relized it would be soon. The little redline buzzer then went off. It goes from 4-8k really fast. I ended up hitting the redline buzzer another time before I sucessfully shifted from 2nd to 3rd while hauling ***. I prolly had it up to like 70 before I knew it. I shut it down about there, wasn't wanting a ticket

Another awesome thing was, I DIDN'T STALL IT!!!

Most fun ever,
Eric

My first time driving stick...an '89 Ford Probe LX. I think i gave my father whiplash. It was really rough...and i think i single handedly took about 10,000 miles of life on the clutch, but its really funny now that i look back at it. My father wasnt the best teacher, he basically told me let the clutch out and give it gas. He never really told me about the friction point and whatnot. A buddy of mine explained it a little better when he taught me on his Accord.

1993 Geo Storm. My brother kept talking about how easy his 1990 was to stall, that I ended up continually making an *** of myself by burning out of lights rather than stall it. That damn thing would burn if you let the clutch out at even 2000 RPM, but would stall if you let it out below 1200. It was an unforgiving teacher, but now I can drive stick quite well.

Unforgiving? Try a '74 super beatle convert, easy to stall and the other end of the spectrum is a lot of noise and burning clutch smell but still not going anywhere!

1983 Porsche 944. i was a junior in high school, dad taught me in an abandoned parking lot one night. not the easiest to learn with no power steering, but not too bad. i drove it to school shortly thereafter a couple times. it got me hooked on superior handling! that car is still parked in the garage

funny story. at the time we lived in grand blanc michigan, a co owner of the YUM company ( taco bell pizza hut and KFC) lived right across the street. he had a purple viper and some other fun things but he let me and my dad try out his viper. that was the firt time i ever drove stick. then as soon as we got back we walked across the street back to our house and then my dad let me drive the 944 which is mine now.

I learned on a 67 Sunbeam Alpine with R-compound tires, manual steering and a small wheel. Talk about hard to turn. The clutch was vague, the shifting was vaguer due to a worn transmission. Driving the 944 after that was a breeze.

I broke my f*cking arm first time driving stick. I just got out of a cast (early to take a written AP test). So then I tried driving my friend's accord...and jerked on one of the shifts. There I was in the middle of the street with a broken arm. Very unpleasant.

I learned how in an 83 VW GTi.

My dad was not very forgiving so I had one of my ex-girlfriend's father teach me. But wow, there was a lot of head-banging going on that day!

I had a ton of fun. That car is scarry fast. My upshifts and downshifts were actually pretty good. I managed to revmatch and whatnot.

Holly hell, when boost hit on that car and the back gets all loose, I was grinning ear to ear. My friend, Justin, said that when some other people drove it they almost shat themselves. I was just crazy happy.

I want to talk him into letting me take it out again sometime, for some more performance type driving. Straightline though. I don't quite trust myself going through turns with turbo's that hit with a vengence at 4k.

93 Saturn SL2. I drove it PERFECT, never stalled, never jerked. That first time had to be the best I've ever driven stick. I never had been taught either. It was one of those 2 AM rob your parents car type deals. The next day my grandfather gave me the car, umm, I was 14...1 year later I sitting at a stop sign and a big E-350 smashed my front end, and he drove away with little scratches, while I waited for a tow truck. Then I got a ticket for it too, can't remember what it was for but I was pissed.

Mike, mine was the exact same experience, but I was piloting the ole' 83 across snow through our apple orchard at 11 at night. Froze my *** off... but man, it was fun walking out to that car, warming her up, and then trying to go down the lane and back up again without killing it in either direction.

Great thread, Eric

The 944 NA is one of, if not the, most forgiving clutch setups ever. That is due to an incredibly poor feel of the clutch (it is AWFUL) that makes learning very easy and makes those of us with more skill (and stronger legs) yearn for a harder pedal. Intro...KEP PP.

Yea, I hate the light pedal in the 944, my stock saturn clutch had a firmer pedal.
