Default my first 944 test drive

well, after learning here that i would fit in a 944 without a problem (thx!), i went and took an 84 944 na for a test drive. overall it was fair, but here are my questions:

1) i did indeed fit (had to even move the seat forward a bit -- a first for me!), but i did have one problem, the steering wheel height. do some 944's not come with tilt? i searched high and low but could find no way to adjust tilt -- as a result the steering wheel was far to low for me.

2) is the age of the car the reason there is so much play in the shifter, or is something actually wrong? gears engaged fine and clutch hardly slipped.

3) sitting at a light i could hear an almost "flowing liquid" like sound coming from somewhere in the rear of the car. any ideas?

i appreciate the input!

I don't know about late (>85.5) type 2 cars, but ALL type 1, e.g. early, cars have a non-tiltable steering wheel.

I'm tall, at least for US standards , and have the same feeling in my '84 944, however I just got used to it. Maybe I'll install a smaller steeringwheel anytime soon, cause that will help a bit.

About your second question, I think you're right...worn shifters is a common problem...easy to replace and not expensive. However there's no real NEED to replace it.

3) I don't realy have a clue

1) i think they changed the height of the steering wheel in the later dash cars to give a little more leg room for taller drivers. You can also go for a smaller diamter aftermarket wheel if you want.

2) Lots of play in the shifter could be from a worn shift rod and bushing, easy to replace.

the liquid sound could just be a car improperly bleeded... but it wouldnt come from the rear... maybe thats the gas tank slushing? doubt that would be audible, it isn't in the new interior.

thx for the responses! i figured the shifter was just old, but i wanted to be sure.

the sound wasnt a slushing like the gas tank, it kinda resembles the noise you would make if you sucked on a straw but didnt entirely cover the tip with your lips. my guess is some kind of line, i was thinking fuel but i didnt smell anything...brakes are a possibility i spose..

as for the top end, i got it up to ~80, it was pretty smooth, perhaps a slight shimmy. i wasnt on the highway so i didnt wanna go any higher than that.

try an 85.5 or later 944. the steering wheel in the legs problem should be a little better.

i drove my brothers 84 a few months back and whacked my knee on the steering column. not a good feeling right after getting an MRI. never did that with my 89.

Maybe it's an exhaust leak.

I agree my 87 is much better than the 84 I test drove but I still hit my knees every once in a while.

my 89 has much better legroom than my 82 924. I think a wheel would cure that.

Wheel bearings.

Think there are 1/2" spacers you can remove from the seat mounting. If they have not been removed already.

An after market steering wheel about an inch less in diameter is a must. Does two things gives more clearence and does not have that offset like the stock wheels that hits your legs when turning.

Noise at stop with clutch out? Torque tube bearings.

With clutch in; throw out bearing. Sound travels down the drive shaft.

Seldom can you hear the fuel pump. Unless all of the insulation has been removed from under the rear cargo area carpet.

The pin on the shift lever is worn. So is the end of the long shift linkage to the trans. Sometimes one of the bolts on the shifting linkage over the top of the trans comes loose.

Air in the cooling system will make a sound like someone left a faucet running but it will sound like it's in the glovebox. I've yet to see a 944 with tilt wheel, as everyone else mentioned the later cars have the wheel mounted a little higher.

Yes, Techno Duck is correct. They raised the height of the steering wheel starting with the 85.5 cars. Try one of these and see how you fit.
