I would imagine that motor was sitting with no plugs in it for many years
That sounds like a solid bet. Yikes.

I've got an iron block 01 LS1 truck motor rusted worse it was in a fire then sat out after I parted the truck for approx 6 months Took a little heat from the torch after soaking in penetrant for a week to get the pistons out!!

I was under the impression that all LS1 engines were aluminum.
